What are good mediterranean diet foods?

Q. All I can really think of is artichokes, tomatoes(I think), and olives/olive oil. I know fish/lean meat is a big part of the mediterranean diet, but I don't eat meat/dairy (vegan). What are some other mediterranean foods?

A. lentils, chickpeas, eggplant, rice, dates, basil, oregano, lemon and garlic to name a few

What do you know about the Mediterranean Diet?
Q. Is there a standard guideline? Or is it just a general rule of thumb? Any links to resources or information would be appreciated!

A. I would say itâs a general rule of thumb as a good diet is about listening to your body and answering your cravings (for missing nutrients),

Itâs not a diet about calorie content but about the kind of food you eat so youâre healthier.
Like eating a lot of olive oil (monounsaturated fats) that not only raises the good HDL cholesterol but also lower the bad LDH cholesterol as well.
You use the extra virgin olive oil for salad dressings and the extra light olive oil for cooking. Itâs lighter in color, not calories, as it was refined to withstand cooking temperature (375F). Do not use the pure olive oil as itâs the lowest quality because itâs not âvirginâ (who needs 3 different olive oils anyway?).

Compared to an American diet, they would cringe at the idea of eating 120 calories per Tbsp of olive oil (men need 2 Tbsp /day for heart health).
Americans (70% of them are overweight) go for low calories, fat free, sugar free, low, diet stuff with fake sugar that really messes up their health and then binge on fast food, fried food and sugary stuff (with taste buds messed up by sweet fake sugar). Since fake sugar creates hunger and leads to obesity, they get fat and get a heart attack before they get old or get some other obesity related diseases.

For me (Iâm from Europe) a healthy diet is just eating fruits and veggies (preferably organic or you grow them), using herbs and spices a lot, salt in moderation, like if you need sodium when making bread as some recipes are about chemistry and need sodium to achieve the proper result. I would never salt my food at the table (as to not mess up my taste buds and I never miss it), with the exception of French fries and potatoes in general which I think always taste better when salty.

If you avoid processed and/or canned food, you avoid a lot of sodium (used for conservation) and water retention.

I eat butter (organic one) for taste as you cannot replace butter with olive oil when you make a sauce (like a Hollandaise sauce for broccoli egg divine) or a cake or when you delicately pan fry your sea scallops in a buttery sauce with garlic, lemon, parsley and paprika.

A Mediterranean Diet would have the proteins not so much coming from red meat but like a pescatarian diet (you can eat dairies, eggs and fish).
But red meat is not excluded, just rare. Like sometimes, I get a craving for a filet mignon or a good steak (once in a blue moon) and Iâll get one.
Good high protein food (for pescetarians who are not vegetarians because they eat fish) are low fat dairies (milk, cheese, yogurts...), eggs (whites and no more than one yolk a day), fish, legumes (beans, peas, chickpeas, lentils, peanuts, peanut butter, including soy milk and tofu that comes from soybeans which are legumes), grains (rice, maize...called corn in the US, whole-wheat pasta and bread, rye, buckwheat, oats, millet...) and nuts/seeds.
If you combine grains with legumes, youâll get complete protein. Like eating a slice of bread with beans, or adding rice to lentils, or eat pasta with peas...even combining grains and legumes in different meals (during the same day) will have them meet later on in the intestines to form complete protein.

Iâm not a pescatarian as I eat chicken, beef, pork, veal but not often. Iâll try anything (short of live bugs)...I ate bison, crocodile, monkey, snake...I was always disappointed...those are too gamey (too chewy with a strong taste).

In Italy, they eat a lot of fish (theyâre surrounded by the sea) and pasta (lots of pasta, lunch and dinner). You can eat weird looking fish there. I tried fishes I could not name...and octopus...actually pretty good but weird when you eat those rubbery suction cups.

Compare to an American diet, you would have less sweets, like coming from sugar/honey (your taste buds are not messed up by fake sugar) and get your carbs from fruits/veggies and other plant foods. Youâll eat less eggs and meat and get your protein from plants food as well, like from legumes, grains, nuts and seeds. And youâll eat less dairies but more cereals and more fats (especially the olive oil).

Yeah...donât forget your glass or red wine.

Any good diet plans or websites for someone who is severely overweight and wants to get motivated?

Q. I am now a whopping 377 lbs and have bad back problems so exercise is almost impossible. I need a strict diet plan and low impact workout plan to get me started. I really need help here. Thank you.

A. Setting yourself on a strict diet can actually be counterproductive, because many times people find that they can't stick to such a strict regimen and they end up "cheating" on the diet...feeling guilty...and well, you can see how this creates a negative cycle.

Do some research, read labels, etc. Eat a healthy diet without starving yourself. If you are a soda drinker, just replacing soda with water can make a tremendous difference.

Moderate walking daily or every other day would probably be the best exercise for you considering your weight. Someone of your size can actually burn a considerable amount of calories just walking at a moderate pace for 20-30 minutes.

What are some diet plans for a diabetic with high cholesterol?
Q. I am an uninsured diabetic who just found out that I have high cholesterol as well. Because I have no insurance I see a sliding scale doctor. They pretty much diagnose me, prescribe medication and offer me little to no advice as to what to eat. Can someone offer me some advice on a diet that may work to lower my cholesterol as well as keep my sugar where it needs to be?

A. High LDL, low HDL, and high triglycerides are common in Type 2 diabetics, especially severely insulin resistant Type 2s. I have known individuals diagnosed with Type 2 whose triglycerides were off the charts (1000+).

The best way to lower triglyceride levels is to lower carbohydrates. I dropped mine from 115 to 70 by just cutting out starches and sugars. Most doctors will tell you to limit fat to drop LDL, but my diet is very high in fat (at least 60% of my diet on most days), including saturated fat (yes, butter - lots of butter), and my LDL fell to 81 from the high 120s and my HDL increased 13 points. A traditional diet to improve cholesterol is full of carbohydrates, like oats and low-fat yogurt, low-fat cheese, and milk, but all those foods will raise your blood sugar and that will work against your cholesterol-lowering goals. Dietary fat is really not the enemy and I think a lot of confusion stems from the fact that lipids are known as 'blood fat.' There's this idea comes from equivocating different types of fat, assuming that dietary fat causes blood fat and body fat. I lost about 75 pounds eating more fat, my cholesterol improved by all measures, and my A1c dropped from over 11% to the low 5% range.

So, I would encourage you to cut back on your carbohydrates, especially grains, corn, oats, potatoes, rice, and sugar, even fruit, and to up your protein, healthy fats, including saturated, and non-starchy vegetables.

Exercise can improve HDL and omega-3 fish oil is great for lowering triglycerides, so these are some supplementary moves you can make along with dietary changes to improve cholesterol and trigs.

I'm sorry your doctor sent you home without more info. I, too, was seeing a sliding scale doctor after I was diagnosed and he gave me very few tips. I began panicking, searching the internet for help, and I talked to some great people who told me what to try. I haven't looked back. Low-carb diets are the way to go if you are a Type 2.

What are good work out and diet plans for off season basketball?
Q. im going to be a senior and im starting varsity on my high school team.

we work out at school and everything but i wanna know a good work out plans that involves running and weights...

also i would like to know a diet of healthy foods i should eat to stay in shape and what foods to stay away from..

A. To make it simple, there is a shake diet you can get on. It'll make sure your getting the nutrition you need. Its especially important when training. Its simple cuz you dont have to worry about recipes or counting calories. Works for me. Heres the website I get mine http://www.shopherbalife.com/ucandoit And as far as workouts, when I was in high school I use to put some weights on my shoulders and do jump lunges. This helped me be quicker and dunk my senior year. Building muscle would be good during the office season, and closer to the season all you have to do is condition. If your building, theres also a protein drink thats good on that site.

How to get through the induction phase of the South beach diet?

Q. I have such a hard time getting through the induction period? Any ideas on how to get through it?

A. The best thing I can recommend is to do your best and try to take your mind off of eating. Try to keep busy doing things you love and your mind will be elsewhere. Furthermore, don't think of how much you'd love to have some of the foods that are limited, but how great the foods you're permitted to have will taste. When you eat, really try to savor it.

Of course, this is all easier said than done but the key is keeping motivated. I liked to think of induction as less of a "diet" than it was trying to make my eating habits healthier. It's such a minor mental quirk, but it did help me lose some of the wanting what I couldn't have mentality...

How much exercise should I do during Phase I of the South Beach Diet?
Q. I am starting the South Beach Diet, and plan on exercising throughout to maximize my weight loss effort. However, I know that my body is going to feel very sluggish during the first 2 weeks as it is so adjusted to having an abundance of carbs. How critical is it to exercise during those first two weeks?

A. I worked out about 3 days a week walking the treadmill for about 30 minutes then I lifted weights just to tone my arms, I also did sit ups and played around with the leg presses after a month of this and faze1 of the South Beach I lost 20 pounds and I got to eat more food then I normally would. I had a baby a year ago so I have some pounds to shed my husband and I will be starting the diet again on Monday! Good Luck

What exactly is in the Mediterranean diet?

Q. I know what to eat daily, weekly, and monthly, but what specific kinds of veggies nuts and grains were they eating?

My mom's going shopping, and I want to put together a list of healthy nuts and grains.

A. The Mediterranean diet is actually a diet the comprises lots of vegetables, legumes, unrefined cereals, fruits and olive oil. It also contains dairy products like cheese, wine, fish and red meat, though in smaller amount compared to the first group mentioned earlier. There are no specific nuts or grains to go for. Just include more in-season whole products (not highly processed types with lots of additives, salt and what have you) you can find into your diet.

According to studies, the Mediterranean diet has anti-inflammatory and anti-hypertensive effects. An adaptation of the Mediterranean diet is the anti-inflammatory diet which you can find out more from the second link below.

How can I go on a vegetarian Mediterranean diet?

How can the mediterranean diet be good for people with bad hearts allows cheese?
Q. i always thought cheese or any type of sold/fats was one of the worse things for hearts.

A. Too much cheese is bad for the heart, but the Mediterranean diet isn't just cheese.

There is a lot of garlic, vinegar, olive oil, red wine, tomatoes, lean meats and fish which are all conducive to a healthy heart.

Also, the Mediterranean diet is generally free of the growth hormones so common in Western meats that are passed on to the consumer and are, in great part, causing the epidemic of obesity in America and Europe.

What weight loss program helps you detoxify and loss weight at a good rate?

Q. I want to detoxify my body and loss weight healthily and rapidly. I want to lose 90 lbs by the end of the year.

A. I did fatloss4idiots diet plan and I lost about 50 pounds in not even 3 months. And I've kept it off for almost 2 years now. I found it to be the easiest diet because it pretty much told you what you could and couldn't eat and you didn't have to count points or anything like that. What I lost really isn't typical for the amount of time I did it but I know others who have done it and they got really good results from it as well.

How do weight loss and breast size interfere?
Q. In other words, if I loose 10 pounds, will my bra size go down? I plan on loosing it fairly quickly, but healthily.

A. I'd say it depends on your starting weight...and genetics of course. And what kinds of exercise you're doing (if any).

It is possible to lose 10 pounds and keep the same size boobs...but your back size could change. But yeah I've lost 10-15 pounds before and wore the same bra size, just the back didn't fit me as well...like in between sizes, that sucks a lot. I actually have boobs so it's not like I went from size A to size A. I think if you work out and you have boobs they will disappear. I'm pretty lazy so whenever I lose weight I just cut back on my calories and such.

What exercise is good for just lovehandles alone?

Q. Im in pretty good health but I have this love handles that I just hate, whats a good way to work them off?

A. Side Planks are great for lovehandles. They focus on your obliques and really get them to shrink in a reasonable amount of time.

What exercise will get rid of stomach fat?
Q. I want a straight answer to this. Everywhere I've been has told me to do cardio and eat a balanced, healthy diet. I've been doing these things, but they don't work by themselves, and I need a specific exercise that will help me get rid of my bulging belly. I don't care about getting toned muscles or a hard abdomen, all I want is a flat stomach. I don't need a category of exercise, I need a specific exercise that I can preferably do at home without any equipment (for example, a side plank). Also, I've heard that side planks are good for getting rid of belly fat. Is that true?

A. - Get a strategy. Note down your workout routines, the time it needs, the time you rest what amount you exercise the amount of reps ⦠all the things. You simply realize youâre having more powerful any time you notice all those results rising.
- Carry weighty not light. Youâre exercising for power and in change you will acquire greater muscles groups. Raising light dos not pressure or struggle your muscles groups so is pointless.
- Simply work each muscle mass until you have pressured it to 100%. This typically intended I would probably do some heat up sets then my final one could be just 10 reps at highest fat. So weighty an 11th rep could be difficult.
- Donât above-work out. Relaxing is when your body cures and develops muscle, extreme workout routines must be accompanied by adequate period to relax and find slim to muscled growing.

What exercise machine is best for diabetic patients?
Q. My dad is a type 2 diabetic patient. His doctor said to buy a exercise machine. Now he wants to know what type of machine to buy. Is the treadmill the best one?

A. The best exercise machine is the one he will continue to use after he passes the initial "fun" stage. If he gets too bored to use the machine, if the machine makes him hurt to the point where he won't use it anymore, if he can't get the hang of how to use the machine, if it takes too much trouble to set up the machine each time--he's not going to continue to use it. This goes for anyone, not just a diabetic. I find a treadmill too mind deadening--I even tried to read while I walked and would fall off the tread, tried to listen to music as I walked but it was still dreadfully boring, treadmill made so much noise I couldn't hear the tv so watching tv was kind of frustrating, might have been ok if I could have a computer on the handlebars so I could play games but again I might have gotten too distracted to stay on the treads. The exercise bike made my derriere hurt after about 5 mins and each time I climbed on it would hurt more because the bruises (or whatever they were) hadn't recovered from the last time I pedaled so I came to dread doing the bike (maybe a different type of exercise bike might have worked better but I'd already bought this one and couldn't afford another one). Tried the Chuck Norris Total Gym but couldn't figure out how to do the various exercises and I live in an apartment with limited space--the thing took up about 6+ feet of space so everyone kept tripping over it. Does your dad want an exercise machine? My brother has diabetes and my mom keeps nagging him to exercise, says she'll buy him any machine he wants but he admits he's not going to use it. If your dad does want a machine, you'd be better off taking him to the store to test drive several machines to see which one he likes best and will use all the time, or maybe get him a membership to a gym that has all the machines so he can change his work out without having to buy his own machines (plus he'll be able to consult a trainer so he's doing exercises correctly so he won't hurt himself). My dad used to go to his gym even long after the doctor forbid him from using any of the machine or using the sauna/jacuzzi/hot tubs because of his health (or lack thereof) merely for the camaraderie.

What diet tips have really worked for you?

Q. I have tried every diet book out there. So far, the only thing that's worked for me is a raw diet but I never can stick to it for long!

A. I still eat everything but in moderation and I count the calories that I take to know if I should stop eating for the day because I'm in a 1,000calorie diet, but in that everything I avoid junk foods like chips which I crave for and sweets because they have lots of calories but sometimes maybe once/twice a month its not bad to satisfy your craving, satisfy ok not to be gluttonous for a day and since dieting makes your metabolism slow I also do exercise like jumping rope.
p.s dont eat much carbs I'm Asian and one of our staple foods is rice so in a meal I ate half a rice and dont forget your water.

What are some good exercises and diet tips that can get rid of body fat in the stomach/abs area?
Q. Lately I've been trying to get rid of my excessive fat before my new job starts on Sept. 1. I've been able to tone my whole body, EXCEPT, for my stomach/abs area. What are some good exercises that target the stomach and abs area. Also, what are some foods that I should stay away from that could add fat to my stomach and abs area?

A. Sit ups will not help all they will do is work your ab muscles and create a bigger belly. You will need to burn it of by cardio exercises or running exercises. Running can be a pain you can try a stepping machine or walk your goal is to sweat as much as u can avoid carbonated drinks, avoid sodium or salt that will make you hold water in your system and make it more difficult to exercise. Just because your trying to get rid of fat doesn't mean you can't eat actually the worst thing to do is stop eating eat healthy like fruits, Veggies, and rice, beans, things like that.

What are some natural remedies and diet tips for my cat's kidney disease?
Q. My cat, 6 yrs old, could possibly have kidney failure (it might be a bladder infection but I won't find out for another 2 weeks after antibiotics); he's still energetic and doesn't show any signs of illness. Ironically I have kidney disease as well and am using natural remedies like dandelion root tea and other herbs. Wheatgrass has also improved my health a lot. I am wondering these herbs would apply to cats as well?

Does anyone have any suggestions for diet (should it be homemade)? I've been doing research and they all say low salt, but some sites say good high quality protein while others say low protein. And should I stop using the chemical Frontline (flea medicine) on my cat?

Also, where on my cat are his kidneys located?

Thanks!

A. First off...the kidneys are located just past the send of the rib cage on both sides...the right kidney is slightly closer to the front of the cat. Frontline Plus doesn't go into the animals system, so it will have no effects on the kidneys...so don't stop using it. I wouldn't reccomend any "natural remedies" without consulting your vet...cats and people can very different recations to plants...and a lot of plats can be nephrotoxic (toxic to the kidneys) in cats!

A diet wont help kidney failure until bloodwork confirms Azotemia...this means the that BUN and CREATINIE are elevated. So unless this has been confirmed by your vet, changing the diet wont help. However, if Azotemia is confirmed, then a low protein/low phospherous diet is highly recomended. The protein that is in the kidney diets is a high quality one. Several brands make kidney diets.... Purina NF, Royal Canin/IVD modified....Hill's K/D..... Royal Canin Renal LP..... However, they are by prescription only, so you have to get them from your vet. If you are interested in making your own diet, you can contact UC Davis, and for a small fee, they will formulate a diet you can cook at home specificaly for your cats needs....

I'm not sure why its going to take so long to confirm that your cat has kidney disease...a simple blood test should confirm if the kidney values are normal or not.

Good Luck!

What diet pills work the best without having to do much or a diet?
Q. I just had a baby and trying to lose some weight before my husband gets back from Iraq :) I dont have much time to diet or work out but I try at time and do try and watch what I eat if I even have the time to. Please help me out as much as you can...thanks so much!

A. I would suggest just proper diet and exersize, because if you are still breastfeeding your baby, the chemicals in the weightloss pills could be ridiculously harmful to your baby, also, there is NO TELLING what they put in those pills.
Congratulations on your husband coming home, God Bless him for serving his country. My husband just came back in May and though he was injured, it was the happiest day of my life to see him alive!

Good luck and God bless!

What are some healthy diet suppliments to boost my weight loss?
Q. Do you know any healthy diet suppliments that are also cheap? I'm an overweight teen and I'm 5'9, big boned and about 50 lbs overweight. I exercise and eat very healthy but I haven't lost as much as I believe I can. Plus my family is short on money.

A. The MOST important thing is to eat naturally..without medicines, chemicals, "starving" your self etc.

first, it would be best for you to eat as healthy as possible..this will also help you considerably to lose weight gradually and naturally..

eat fresh fruits, vegetables, drink plenty of WATER..avoid all cokes, caffeines, smoking, alchohol etc. as these also add weight as well as they contain chemicals which disturb your natural bio rythmns as well as brain chemistry. try not to eat too much meat, and the meat you should eat should be "lean meat" such as steamed chicken and rice, or steamed fish with rice..and vegetables,, this should be your staple diet rice and vegetables with fruits..AVOID "JUNK FOOD" and "Fast Food" as this type of food is very unhealthy, lacking in vitamins really and has plenty of fattening molecules which make one gain weight and is not good .

if you snack,, try fruits with yogurt or fruit yogurt and nuts.. nuts are very healthy for your body .and contain proteins.

go for walks every evening or morning or whenever you get time each day for 1 hour or 2 hours..make this somewhere you enjoy walking even if you have to drive a bit to there..and make this a daily routine..you will enjoy it once you get into it ..and it makes you feel great after..just walking for 1 hour or 2 hours.

if you do this..every day for one month ..you should lose around 10 pounds (.714 stone) per month until you get to your natural healthy weight.. look up on the internet for an idea of what your weight for your height should be ..and when you get to this weight,,your body will look very nice and you will feel very good.

10 pounds (.714 stone ) each month in 3 months you should lose 30 pounds (2 stones, 2 pounds)..for sure...but no junk food and dont drink alcohol or smoke, dont eat junk..just healthy food with vitamins and walking 1 hour or 2 hours every day..and drink plenty of water..this is guaranteed way to lose weight naturally and for good, if you stick to this, which you should,,as it makes you feel so much more positive due to the vitamins and lack of chemicals making you feel depressed...

btw, forgot to mention,,just in case you dont know how to really make healthy meals..buy a "food steamer" at your local deparment store..they are very cheap and work very well..as well as buy a "rice cooker" which is also very cheap..eating rice is a great way to get your necessary carbs "healthy carbs" to lose weight and has lots of natural energy inside. you can buy asian rice at most large supermarkets or if you have a local oriental market..they sale quality asian rice.. thai or indian rice is good "jasmine rice".. buy corn or canola oil to sprinkle on vegetables or rice before steaming to add to taste as well as you can buy several nice spices like "cumin" or "Curry powders", etc.just sprinkle on the vegetables before steaming to give nice taste.

drink "Green Tea" as this is very healthy and helps burn extra fat faster...you can buy quality green tea at most oriental shops or large supermarkets as well

How expensive is Jenny Craig to do per month?
Q. I just want a round about number, no need to specific. Also how successful were you on the program?

A. There are different plans within Jenny Craig but they are soooo expensive. The first answer has the right amount (sorry I didn't read the others).

The cool thing about Jenny Craig is if you call their 800 number they don't mess around. They tell you about the different plans and give the total cost right up front. When I called I was like, "Wow - I will have to talk to my husband first," and she said, "Okay just call us back when you are ready!" No pressure and no calls to me to push the product since.

How much does Jenny Craig Weight Loss Program cost to join?
Q. I would like to try this program, can someone tell me if it's worth it? How much did you pay a month?

A. It depends on when you join. They always change their promotional join now programs, but the current (and it seems most popular) is the "lose 20 pounds for $20, plus the cost of food". Food, from my experience, can vary based on your tastes and what you like, but look to spend between $85-100 or so per week on Jenny Craig Cuisine. You'll also add some of your own vegetables, salads etc. from the local grocery store.

I've also seen "$6 per week" plus food.

How to lose weight without sacrificing muscle?

Q. I'm 6'2 220 pounds and want to lose a little fat. I have always lifted weights . My max bench is 325 and thats really only lifting two times a week, but no cardio. So to get to back to my question. If I eat vegetables most of the day instead of fatty foods and drink a protein shake along with cardio at least three times a week. Also, lifting 3 times a week will this help me lose fat while maintaining my muscle? If not then what type of foods should I eat to get my protein?

A. The newly developed all natural Cinch Inch Loss Plan would be perfect. It's powered by leucine, an essential amino acid that travels directly to muscle to signal protein synthesis. It helps your body preserve muscle mass while you lose weight and inches from fat. It's easy to follow and very healthy.

On most diets, you lose muscle as well as fat. When you lose muscle, you lose some of your body's ability to burn fat, and your metabolism drops.

I was on the plan for three weeks and lost 10 lbs., 4 1/2 inches from my waistline and 2 1/4 inches from my hips. I lost from other parts of my body as well.

You lose fat, weight, and inches while retaining 100% of your lean muscle.

Hope this is helpful and feel free to contact me with questions.

How to lose weight without going anorexic?
Q. I don't have access to a gym, any expensive equipment or anything and my life us rather busy.
Still, how can I get skinny and lose about a kilo without having to exercise for hours a day?

I eat a balanced diet, a few fruits and vegetables a day, a bit too little protein and low GI foods. I don't really eat any sugars either.

A. I understand how hard it is to lose weight. I've been dieting for a long time and it was really rough on me knowing that I work so hard and can't lose weight. I found out a few years ago that I have a disease called Hypoglycemia. It has the same exact symptoms as diabetes, but is actually the polar opposite of diabetes. It's where my blood sugar drops to dangerously low levels and I can go into a coma. The only way to keep this under control is to constantly eat.

Eating all day has made it difficult for me to lose weight, but there's ways around it.

Here's what I can tell you.

Walk. If you walk for at least one hour non stop every day, you will see a dramatic change in your body and weight in as little as a month. It has to be non stop walking. So if you're close to a lake, or a school, just WALK around the track for an hour. You don't have to run. Take it easy on yourself.

Eat small but frequent meals. This has been working for me. I eat 6 times a day, and all of my food is organic, and healthy.

Eat until you're satisfied, don't stuff yourself till you're full.

Do NOT eat after 6:00 PM. Do the best you can on this. The good news, is that you can virtually eat like a pig all day, but if you stop eating after 6:00 PM you will still lose weight!

Do yoga. It is relaxing, stretches out your muscles, improves balance and core, and meditates your mind.

Drink DISTILLED water. Not tap water. Or if you have a refrigerator with a water spout go ahead and use that.

If you slip up, don't feel guilty about it. It will stress you out and potentially make you gain more weight.

You said you don't have access to a gym. That's fine. I have two Kim Kardashian Workout DVDs, and a Billy's Boot camp DVD. They really really work and all you need are some dumbells and a step (For the Kim Kardashian ones) I got them from Amazon.com

Here are the links.

You can do this. Don't be too hard on yourself, set reachable goals, and take it one day at a time.

How many calories are in boiled potatoes and what are good low calorie toppings?

Q. Im trying to get down to 110 pounds, and I was wondering how many calories are in one boiled potato? Depending on size to. And what are good toppings? I don't like sour cream or yogurt on my potatoes but other low calorie (under 100) will be appreciated! Will choose best answer!

A. They make low calorie toppings for stuff like that. They have these popcorn flavorings, which can also be put on potatoes, vegetables, etc. I don't know specifically what brands your store has, but look around and they'll be in there. The brand I have is Kroger.

How many calories should I be eating and how many calories should i be burning from exercise?
Q. For my entire life I've been over weight and have tried to lose weight countless times but each and every time ended in a failed attempt. But I feel like this time it's actually going to lead to something. I've been going to the gym every week for two weeks now and actually look forward to going to the gym and think dieting is fun. But I'm not too sure if I'm burning the amount of calories I should be from exercise. I go to the gym 6-7 times a week and spend 50 minutes on the elliptical and then take a 30 minute walk home ( of course Im walking pretty slowly so i don't think that walk home is burning much of anything. ) I burn 650-700 calories just from the elliptical in that 50 minutes. I then try to consume 1500 calories a day by eating breakfast lunch and dinner. My breakfast is a pretty pathetic excuse for a breakfast but it includes of a Fiber One bar that's 90 calories. Just something to make it through the 6 hours of school and after school activities. When i get home I tend to eat 400-600 worth of " normal " and healthy food as well as for dinner. I'm currently 6 feet 3 inches weighing at 262. I was 268 two weeks ago.

Also how does sodium effect your diet? I know that increases your blood pressure and that's one of the reasons why I want to lose weight. I tend to eat maybe 1800 mg of sodium a day which is just under the recommended amount. Am I eating too much? If so how much sodium should I eat a day to lower blood pressure? Thanks guys! If you need any more information just ask and ill add an edit.

A. Unfortunately, there really is no magic answer to weight loss. There is no secret solution, no mystery. Simple things you do can help tremendously. Eat a healthy diet of about 1800 calories a day - you do need to learn to count calories to some degree, and there are tons of sites that will help you with that, as well as the labels on foods. Start keeping a record everyday of what you eat, because we all usually tend to consume more calories than we think we do. Eliminate ALL junk food, sodas, pop, sweets, fried foods, fast foods, fruit juices, and processed foods. Everyday eat fruit, veggies, a few nuts, lean meat and fish, whole grain breads and cereals, low fat dairy products. The many meal replacement products on the market can be a good tool to help you get started on a better eating plan. Use them in the first week or two if you like to replace one meal a day. Make sure you get one that has a good protein content. Special K makes a protein shake and the Glucerna shakes have higher protein content. Go for a brisk 45 minute walk twice a day if you can, everyday. Climb lots of stairs. Drink plenty of water. If at all possible start a weight lifting/strength training program at a gym and get some instruction from the gym trainer. It will work. Here are a few sites that may help.

Sodium will also make you retain water.

How many calories do I need every day excluding the amount of calories I burn in exercise?
Q. I searched on Google, but all the calorie calculators I found asked about how much exercise I get. I am 5'3", I weigh 95 pounds, and I am 13 years old. I know how many calories I burn per day, so that is why I want to know how many calories I actually NEED to have to maintain my weight.
In the calories that I burn every day, I am including calories that I burn when I sit, stand, sleep, etc.

A. To maintain your weight, eat as many calories as you're burning per day. To gain weight, eat more calories (but the GOOD kind! No twinkies or junk food. ;-) )

Best diet menu to eat for maximum weight loss?

Q. I'm thinking of starting a weight loss diet and im trying to lose 40lbs.
I have a complete exercise plan but I am still confused on a specific diet plan that will help me achieve maximum weight loss..
Any good menus that have worked with anyone else?

A. Hi,

I graduated high school at 240 pounds and at 5 foot 3 that made me about as round as I was tall. I was one of those overweight teenagers who ate anything and everything without any regard to the effects it was having on my own body. Therefore, I began the diet pills, which did not work; I ate the special diet foods and even began drinking diet beverages. None of this stuff worked for me, just as it does not work for millions of overweight people. Eating less did not work and I was not one to work out or even get up and do anything remotely related to exercise. I knew I would look silly and it would hurt. I never thought or really cared about the health effects this would have on me, back then.

A year ago after a successful weight loss plan, now at 120 pounds, it is a major difference. I've lost 30 pounds in the first month. The most significant change in my life is the amount of energy I now have and the way my clothes fit loosely. Everyone close to me and people I havenât seen in a while are amazed and tell me that I look really good. This is a life changing experience for me although at first I was skeptical about the weight loss plan.

Our own metabolism system play a vital part in controlling the amount of body fat burned in the process of providing energy to the body. Knowledge about our own metabolism function is the mother to all weight loss programs. With the knowledge you not only reduce your weight but able to maintain an ideal weight and living a healthy life. The weight loss program has proven to be effective in the short and long-term, without need to endure starvation and without any daily athletic workout. (But taking a light exercise every few days is highly recommended). Best of all you can eat what you most enjoyed without gaining any weight The weight loss program is affordable by all and do not need to pay a monthly fees to use it. In contrast to diet pills regime where you need to buy it on a regular basis and the amount of lose weight will reversed back when you stop consuming it.

The success has inspired me to help others and i am sure you won't be disappointed. The link is at the source below and discover how you can become noticeably thinner in 11 days by eating in a way you'll actually enjoy.

why do diet menus give really expensive meal plans or impossible menus for everyday people to make?
Q. I looked up the dash diet and the menus they give for lunch and dinner I've never heard of! I would love to find a diet plan that I could I could use with everyday food!

A. Statistically, the success of a diet correlates strongly with how expensive the diet is. Apparently, the more expensive the diet is, the more likely people are going to stick to it because of the money they've spent. Basically people are more motivated when they've risked more financial resources.

Do you know where to find a budget diet menu plan?
Q. Not just a diet please, a diet menu plan with complete meals and recipes. I just can't find one with a grocery list that costs lest than 50 bucks a week per person, and that's if I already have a fully stocked pantry. If I didn't have the pantry items like spices on hand, most meal plans I've seen would cost at least 200. Please tell me there's a budget menu out there :(

A. Unfortunately there are no plans out there that cost less than 50 bucks a week for a full week. Most of them out there cost about 30-50 dollars a day. However, Nutrisystem has a meal plan where they provide you with three meals a day plus snacks, and it really helps you lose weight for about 10 dollars a day. That is by far the cheapest one out there.

Can you be on Jenny Craig and not talk to a consultant weekly?

Q. My aunt isn't comfortable talking to a stranger about her weight and weightloss. She is very timid and shy. She isn't comfortable about talking to someone she hasn't met in person about dieting. Is there an option where you can speak to a consultant by e-mail or an option to not speak with a consultant at all?

A. No. You have to speak with a consultant he/she is the one that will be following your progress, giving you the diet, and weighting you.

How do the programs for Jenny Craig and Weight Watchers actually work?
Q. I'm curious how much the food costs for a full month and what are the calorie guidelines if any.

A. I dont know about J.C., but W.W. is not about calories. You get a certain amount of points based on your weight and your activity level, and once you are done with your points, you are done eating for the day. Its a very easy program to follow, and you meet a lot of pple when you go to the meetings. You are weighed in every week, and you set a weight loss goal with help from your leader, once you hit that and you stay at your goal for 6 weeks, you are a member for life for free.

What is the cost of jenny craig food per week?
Q. Just curious. I've been struggling to get the "last ten" off. Weight watchers plateaued me out at 1100 calories a day. So I thought I'd look around for something different.

A. I am currently on Nutrisystem, which is really similar to Jenny Craig, but is actually a lot less expensive!! I absolutely love it! So far, I've lost 15 pounds in my first 4 weeks. The food is delicious and I've been seeing great results!

For an additional $30 off your first order, you can use one of the following Buddy Bucks promo codes: 7f74ae9, 7f725ad, 7f7039f, 7f8106e, 7f74b0a, 7f7678b, 7f814f2, 7f6b880, 7f791b7, 7f6989e, 7f09477, 7f1702c, 7cf0ce4, 7d002fe, 7f1800d, 7f1230e, 7f1d982, or 7f134be (If one doesn't work, try some of the others. How exactly do weight loss challenges work?

Q. I see all of these weight loss challenges scattered throughout the internet, but they usually only have a start and end date with no rules. Are you supposed to come up with an individual plan and then join the challenge for however long it lasts for? What is a challenge?!

A. The first and best of all ways to lose weight is to exercise. Sure, you've probably heard it a million times already, but why then are you still surfing the Net in search for that magic pill? Set yourself a routine to follow and then stick to it, the biggest reason people never get anywhere in life and ultimately never lose weight is that they don't set a specific plan to follow. They just wake up randomly one day and tell themselves that they're going to change their life around by going out and jogging for an hour or two. Next day they do the same thing and start to think that they can really maintain what they're doing for as long as they live. Fast forward to the sixth day and they're in bed telling themselves they'll go out jogging tomorrow. But they never do go out jogging. No matter how determined you are, you will never get anywhere without a clear schedule and plan. (It's just like construction projects, they don't just happen overnight, right?)

How do vibrating weight loss machines work?
Q. Ok I would really like to know how getting shaken makes you loss weight? because it seems like a scam to me.

A. It is a scam. It doesn't make you lose weight.

What are good weight loss tips for teenagers?
Q. I'm 15, 5'4 and i weigh 172. I really want to loose weight so i can look good in a bikini and have confidence in myself. Help someone give me tips please!

A. Drink a lot of water, like 7-10 cups a day, you'll lose 10 pounds if you do that for more than ten days in a row & eat lots of fruits and vegetables & stay away from greasy foods & try to get some exercise but if you don't feel like doing hard core workouts just make sure you move around a lot & not just sit around.

What diet plans have you had success with?
Q. I am seriously OB I am 6' and weigh 376 I gained a ton of weight when I quit smoking. I am starting to have complications from my weight and just want to be healthy and feel good. I was just wondering what some others have had success with.

A. i follow a long term low carb diet and it works wonders!! but if u try and and eat high amount of carbs ul put the weight back on in days! so yeh its a long term life style. u gotta like ur meat and eggs!!
people get fat because they consume high amount of carbs not fat. research it!

What are some diet plans for morbidly obese people?
Q. I have an emotional attachment to food. When I'm stressed, sad, scared, lonely, or whatever I will start eating a lot of junk food. I have piled on the weight over the years and I'm over 300 pounds now. I don't know where to go or what to do. Are there guidelines or diet plans for morbidly obese people?

A. Its very hard to control food intake when having an emotional attachment to food; I know what you feel. But it's good already that you realize that this is your problem. Perhaps more exercise will help controlling your weight; but in any case I think no exercise or diet will succeed unless you address the root cause; your emotional attachment to food. I have the same problem, and found that especially at home Im very prone to compulsive, emotional over-eating.

I found it helpful to be with people which distracts and suppresses the need to eat. Also any activities that require you to be out of your normal surrounding is great to help distract me from food. It does not resolve the problem, but to an extend I have managed to keep at least my weight reasonable stable. A support group like suggested before may help.

How do chiropractic weight loss programs work?

Q. I see many ads for weight loss programs administered by chiropractors. What does this involve, and has anyone had success with them?

A. All a chiropractic "weight loss program" does, is make your wallet smaller. Just another chiro-scam to steer clear of. Chiropractors are not qualified as dietitians, and of course not to be trusted with your health. It's just a money making scheme for them.

What diet should I feed my dog with cancer?

Q. He has had surgery for hemangiosarcoma, and I want to prolong the life he has left.

I've just switched him to a raw diet combined with all protein and vegetable kibble. No grains.
Yes, I have talked with the vet and he suggested a few different diets. I am looking for peoples' experiences.
I"m also giving him 1000 mg of Omega 3 a day.

A. O my goodness I asked the same question last week.
Im so sorry your dog has cancer, I know what youre going through and it will be ok.

I make my dogs food as well, as this is the best way to control the cancer. And I give her Orijen grain free kibble if shes still hungry at night.
I mainly feed chicken and just add vegetables I have on hand, like celery, zucchini, potato etc (but not sugary ones)
So far youve got it right, No Grains. These turn to glucose which feeds cancer cells.
You also want to limit naturally sugary vegetables like carrots and pumpkin, and only feed fruit on occasion if you want.

Look up the cancer starving diet, which limits the amount of glucose you give to a dog because cancer cells need glucose to survive.

Here are two GREAT sites
http://www.b-naturals.com/Sum1998.php
http://www.b-naturals.com/newsletter/cancer-diet/

EDIT: I also add NUPRO supplement to her food, which completely balances the meal, as well as Salmon Oil.
It is good to make sure your dog gets a lot of Protein and good fatty acids like Omega 3.

GOOD LUCK

What kinda diet or diet medicine is good for someone without a thyroid?
Q. i had surgery 2 year ago because i had graves disease, i was tried all the time and lost weight . ihad to much calcuim in my body, now that my thyroid has been took out im gaining weight.

A. Forget about the diet pills. What's most important is thyroid levels. The morning TSH needs to be around 1.0 if you are on T4 (Synthroid, Levoxyl) Also, you want to make sure you are converting enough T4 into T3. You can find this out by having a free t3 test. The result should be at least midrange. If its below midrange, it means you are a poor converter of T4 to T3. A T4/T3 medication like Armour thyroid or Thyrolar might help. On T4/T3, medication dosage is adjusted by free t4 and free t3, not by TSH.

As far as diet, decrease carbs and increase fiber,

Exercise 4+ times per week. Drink lots of water and limit sugar

What is a healthy diet for 14 year old trying to loose weight?

Q. I have been getting out, riding my bike, exercising, etc., but i haven't noticed much of a weight change. I have have noticed that the things that the things that I have been eating aren't very healthy. I'm not sure what would be a healthy diet for me, but I am willing to go on one, so please help me!

A. Just eat things that seem natural. Get in your fiber, water, veggies etc.
Something that helped me was logging what I ate/how I exercised... I use myfitnesspal.com It's free and stuff but you'd just have to say you're older then you are when you make an account. It's now my new favorite thing... I love it. On it you log your exercise, calories, and water and it creates guidelines of how much of those you need to do to get a certain weight by a certain time.

What is a healthy diet for someone who is anemic and a very picky eater?
Q. So i recently found out that i am severely anemic. And im also extremely picky about what i eat. Does anybody have any ideas of any kinds of food that would be good for me?

A. Eat a balanced diet of lean fish, meat, white meat no skins, no fried. Whole grains, veggies, fruits, low fat low cal dairy if you're trying to lose.
Eat slowly, eat fiber rich food in small portions.

Drink plenty of water make sure you know how much iron is in everything so you can build your blood count back up.

I have been anemic at several times in my life and now that I eat balanced diet and have researched how much iron is in foodsI have not been anemic for about 10 years.

What would be a healthy diet and exercise?
Q. I am 5'7 and 190 lbs. I currently am walking 30 minutes a day, do elliptical bike for 20 min every other day, and do Jillian Michaels 30 day shred everyday. What would be a good diet and am I doing anything wrong or should I add anything to my workouts?

A. Hey Liz,

Exercise is good for weight loss. But you may need to control your eating habit too. Previously I did exercise to losing weight but end up getting fatter. This is because after exercising my stomach getting more starved and eat more... Well, I suggest that you may continue your exercise but try to eat some whole meal food like oats, cereals and also drink some green tea or fresh fruit juice.... remember don't add sugar into the fruit juice. Bottle fruit juice won't work.

Currently I'm personally using a diet plan and help me reduce couple of pounds already you may take a look.

Q. Im just curious. So yeah, what is the maximum bmi you could have, and still not have a period?

A. it depends on your natural size. some girls can healthily have a low weight because of genetics. that's not my case however and i lost my period when i was around a 17 BMI.

Can a BMI calculator tell the difference between muscle and fat?
Q. I'm a naturally thin person (I'm 5'5" and normally about 100 lbs.), but I'm also very athletic. During the cross country season I'm often 108-110 lbs. because muscle weighs more than fat. Whenever I calculate my BMI it says that I have a higher percentage of body fat when I'm more in shape, even though I know this is not accurate. Is there a BMI calculator available that can distinguish between fat and muscle?

A. Nope BMI does not measure body fat percentage, it's merely a comparison of height and weight and takes no account of frame size, muscle mass, etc.

The only way to get an accurate body fat reading is by DEXA, hydrostatic weighing or body fat callipers.

What are some good diet plans to lose fat?

Q. My goal is to lose 15-20 pounds. I wanted to try the basic fat burning soup diet, or the 3-day diet. What are some good ones that actually work?

A. go wheat free. No pasta, pizza, bread and so on. And no food
after 7 p.m. People achieve marvellous results with it. Depending on

you don't eat wheat then you don't eat all those sticky, fatty goey

What are some good diet plans that actually have worked?
Q. It's been long since I've been on a diet, everyday I've been running a mile on treadmill for a week & lost 2 pounds. But I want to lose about 10 fast are there any diet plans that work? I'm not a cooker so simple stuff.

A. Losing 10 lbs a month is a good and safe target. Any faster weight loss is likely to be temporary only and in most cases you regain it all.

Running, jogging, cycling, swimming, dancing, push ups, sit ups, squats, brisk walking and power walking all help for weight loss but dieting helps more.

One of the healthiest weight loss diets is the DASH diet.

The healthy DASH diet can help you lose weight safely and effectively, lower your cholesterol and lower your blood pressure.

It is based on an eating plan rich in fruits and vegetables, and low-fat or non-fat dairy, with whole grains. It is a high fiber, low to moderate fat diet, and is rich in potassium, calcium, and magnesium.

You can see further details in a web search for "dash diet" + "lose weight".

What are some good diet plans or ideas for losing weight?
Q. I'm a 15 year old girl and I weigh 188 pounds and I would like to change my weight. Is there any sort of diet that I could go on like a specail fruit diet or something? I'm open to anything that absolutely works and gets pretty quick and noticeable results.

A. A simple way to lose weight is to cut out sugar and starch. You donât have to go low carb, but it helps to reduce your junk carbs and replace them with better carbs (beans, vegetables, fruit) and some fat (fat makes a meal more satisfying so you can get by eating less total calories.)

Exercise can speed up results. On that TV show âBiggest Loserâ they exercise all the time.

A Paleo Diet is a good overall approach. It emphasizes natural, whole foods instead of modern processed foods. http://www.paleo-diet.co
