How accurate are the calorie counters on treadmills and cardio equipment?

Q. Any ideas on how accurate the counters are on treadmills and other cardio equipment at the gym? My gym uses Precor equipment and I always wonder how close the display is to the actual calories I'm burning. Obviously it's probably a little closer if you put in your age and weight, but what about basic muscle mass and body composition?

A. They are totally just a toy added feature with no accuracy.
They assume everyone burns energy at the same rate which isn't right.

It comes down to your own individual bodies chemical composition and reactions.
Do your exercise everyday and use digital scales to keep an approximate record. And obviously eat a balanced diet.

Q. Hoping to find some people who own one and what their experience is w/what they purchased. Recommend or not and why.

A. I bought one a few weeks ago just cause it looked soooo cool..it has a lot of buttons (wahooo!) and cool sounds when something is happening, or going to happen, or already happened or something...anyways as a workout tool it's totally useless...oh yeah... it has cool little lights on it too. The heart rate monitor is wayyyy off (if it works at all). If I want to calorie count I have to reset my weight every time and then I have to go double check it on the net anyway because it doesn't seem right (and I'm right..it's never right D'OH!) It doesn't have a lap timer..on and on..I wouldn't buy another one.

where can i find a calorie counter monitor?
Q. I want something like this so when i go out for a jog i know how much calories i am burning. Websites would be helpful or links.

A. There are lots of good websites. Go to Google and type the words "calorie calculator." Take your pick. An easy rule of thumb is to figure you will burn 100 calories per mile whether you walk it or run it. Unless you are really in good shape (running under 8 minutes per mile) the rule of thumb is quite reliable. Good luck!

How do the programs for Jenny Craig and Weight Watchers actually work?

Q. I'm curious how much the food costs for a full month and what are the calorie guidelines if any.

A. I dont know about J.C., but W.W. is not about calories. You get a certain amount of points based on your weight and your activity level, and once you are done with your points, you are done eating for the day. Its a very easy program to follow, and you meet a lot of pple when you go to the meetings. Q. I have an emotional attachment to food. When I'm stressed, sad, scared, lonely, or whatever I will start eating a lot of junk food. I have piled on the weight over the years and I'm over 300 pounds now. I don't know where to go or what to do. Are there guidelines or diet plans for morbidly obese people?

A. Its very hard to control food intake when having an emotional attachment to food; I know what you feel. But it's good already that you realize that this is your problem. Perhaps more exercise will help controlling your weight; but in any case I think no exercise or diet will succeed unless you address the root cause; your emotional attachment to food. I have the same problem, and found that especially at home Im very prone to compulsive, emotional over-eating.

I found it helpful to be with people which distracts and suppresses the need to eat. Also any activities that require you to be out of your normal surrounding is great to help distract me from food. It does not resolve the problem, but to an extend I have managed to keep at least my weight reasonable stable. A support group like suggested before may help.

A. I would make the difference here between Southern Europe and South-Eastern Europe. South-Eastern Europe is the whole Balkan peninsula (Greece, a part of Turkey, Bulgaria, Albania, Romania and ex-Yugoslavia); but Southern Europe is usually considered to be Mediterranean (Turkey, Greece, Italy, Spain and Portugal). Cyprus is geographically not in Europe, but geopolitically it is, so OK you can add it.

The diet is healthy because they eat a lot of fresh fruits and vegetables, olive oil, sea food etc.

What should be included or excluded to get a "Mediterranean diet"?
Q. I know a Mediterranean diet is basically rich in tomatoes and olive oil, pasta, and salads. I don't know about their saturated fat intake but they seem to be big on cheese and cold cuts. But what about spices. Maybe they have less heart trouble because of something in the spice category? Or is it just the olive oil? What spices are common in such Mediterranean diets?

A. My wife started us on what she calls a Mediterranean diet. She says we don't eat meat, or poultry. In our version is fish, fruit, vegetables and whole grain. Common spices are basil, cilantro, curries. dill
Think less heart trouble is a combination of all.

What diet pills work the best without having to do much or a diet?

Q. I just had a baby and trying to lose some weight before my husband gets back from Iraq :) I dont have much time to diet or work out but I try at time and do try and watch what I eat if I even have the time to. Please help me out as much as you can...thanks so much!

A. I would suggest just proper diet and exersize, because if you are still breastfeeding your baby, the chemicals in the weightloss pills could be ridiculously harmful to your baby, also, there is NO TELLING what they put in those pills.
Congratulations on your husband coming home, God Bless him for serving his country. My husband just came back in May and though he was injured, it was the happiest day of my life to see him alive!

A. First of all, you need to buy the book. It explains everything in there. But just a quick overview.... There are 3 phases, the 1st phase you do for 2 weeks. But in the first 2 weeks you can lose 8 -13lbs. I lost 12 in my first two weeks. Then after 2 weeks, you slowly start adding the good carbs. Fruits and things that are very low in sugar. After you are down to the weight you want you can go to phase 3. Which is eating things that are low in carbs and pretty much eat the things that are healthy for you. A. The South Beach Diet is a fine way of eating if you are close to normal weight and are not addicted to carbs. South Beach allows a higher carb level but fewer protein & fat choices (if you would rather eat beans than beef, this may be a better choice). Atkins (and I) believe saturated fat is a much more healthful fat for fueling the body. If you lower carbs you have to increase fats to fuel the body.


Eating carbs while trying to lose body fat is terribly inefficient. When in glycolysis (burning glucose as fuel) you have to lower your calories (which slows your metabolism) & exercise heavily to deplete your glycogen stores before burning body fat.

The core of Atkins program is converting the body from glycolysis (burning glucose as fuel) to ketosis (burning fat as fuel). Dietary fat levels need to be at >65% of total calories, if not, the body will still remain in glycolysis by converting 58% of excess protein into glucose (via gluconeogenesis).

It takes minimum of 3 days to convert a body to ketosis, (but only one bite to convert back to glycolysis). People feel sluggish the first week but most feel better than ever thereafter.

Simple carbohydrates (sugar, flour, bread, cereal, pasta, potatoes, rice) trigger insulin which can store the calories eaten into fat. The more protein the more the fat burning hormone glucagon is released. The more carbohydrate the more the fat storage hormone insulin is released.

Simple carbs are addictive & can be disastrous to health. The best way to break the addiction is NO carbs for 3 days. Make a huge batch of deviled eggs, eat one every time you want "something" - have huge omelets with bacon, sausage, peppers, mushrooms & cheese. Pork chops smothered with peppers, mushrooms & cheese - pork rinds & dip or tuna/chicken/turkey/egg salad - steaks - a huge sugar free cheese cake. Eat so much you won't feel deprived of anything. By the 4th day, the addiction will be gone & you can start making healthy choices.

High insulin levels promote inflammation, weight gain, hunger & unbalance other hormones. Controlling insulin levels will balance out other hormones & allow human growth hormone (HGH) to be produced naturally so lean muscle will be gained even without exercise. Any exercise will greatly increase muscle mass with high HGH levels.

You can lose more body fat eating protein & fat (don't eat protein alone) than not eating AT ALL. To lose weight fast, eat all you want, but nothing but meat, eggs, healthy oils, mayo, butter & half an avocado a day (for added potassium). Keep the calories high & the fat percentage high, at least 65% of calories. Green vegetables & some cheese will continue weight loss but at a slower pace.

The first 2 weeks eat several cups a day of (mostly) lettuce & celery, cucumbers, radishes, mushrooms, peppers & more variety of vegetables thereafter - add 5 grams per day additional every week (20 grams day first 2 weeks, 25grams 3rd week, 30grams 4th week etc) til you gain weight, then subtract 10grams. That will be your personal carb level (everyone is different & depends on how active you are.)

Start with meat, fats & salads for 2 weeks and then slowly add in more green veg, wk4 fresh cheeses, wk5 nuts & seeds, wk6 berries, wk7 legumes, wk8 other fruits, wk9 starchy veg, wk10 whole grains. You will learn how your body reacts to different foods.

The first week is just water weight but fat is lost thereafter if you keep your calories high enough. Otherwise the body will strip it's own lean tissue for nutrition. Although that may look great on a scale it will make it MUCH easier to accumulate fat in the future (since all that pesky lean tissue burning up calories will be gone). The body won't release fat stores if you lower calories below what it needs. It will slow metabolism to compensate & store every spare ounce as fat. If you continue lowering calories, it will continue lowering the set point, til it can survive off nothing & store fat on anything. The body will only release it's fat stores if it knows there is plenty of nutritious food.

Ground flax seed (2 Tbsp) 1/4 cup water, artificial sweetener, mix in a raw egg - let sit 10 min. to absorb liquid, put some cream cheese in the middle & nuke 2 minutes. Suggested for daily fiber needs.

As long as you have <9grams carbs per hour, you will maintain insulin control & shouldn't gain weight, no matter the calories. Many people gain weight on high carb, do low carb to lose weight & then are shocked when they return to high carb & gain weight. Many people can return to moderate carb levels but very few can really eat all they want of sugar & maintain weight or health.

How can i eat more calories in the atkins diet?

Q. I am starting the atkins diet but i cant get my calories up. I calculate my calories and im only eating a rough 900 calories, usually its less. I mostly eat chicken, tuna, turkey, avocados, lettuce and light mayo for the tuna. What are ways i can up my calories while keeping my net carbs down?

A. Every day you should be eating these 2 items. Together they are 1000 calories 80% of calories from fat - 90g fat 10g net carbs. If you need additional fat or calories, you can add a tablespoon of virgin coconut oil to the ground flax seed cereal. All fats can be used for sustained energy, but virgin coconut oil is the only fat that is converted to quick energy (like a carb, but without triggering insulin)

Half an avocado mashed with 2 ounces of mayo seasoned with cayenne & eaten with pork rinds or celery.

Ground flax seed (4 Tbsp) 1/4 cup water, artificial sweetener, mix in a raw egg - let sit 10 min. to absorb liquid, put some cream cheese in the middle & nuke 2 min for daily fiber needs.

Eating salads with full fat dressing will help get the fat & calories up also. Do not use "light" mayo make sure you use full fat. "Low fat" items replace the fats with carbs (starches or sugar). Deviled eggs are one of my favorite snacks. Cheese cake is another tasty option. After 2 weeks, ask again & I'll link you to some great recipes for pizza, chili dog casserole, flax bread & others.

The first 2 weeks when foods are limited you still eat a high fiber diet - just these 4 examples of foods which should be eaten daily during induction, gives you 33.5grams of dietery fiber - well over the RDA of 25g & much higher than the Standard American Diet. After 2 weeks, you are allowed almost all nonstarchy vegs (less than 25g net carbs in week 3)

21g total carbs - 13g fiber - 8g net carbs - Lettuce, Romaine- 1 head
12g total carbs - 8g fiber - 4g net carbs - Celery - 4 cups chopped (about 8 stalks)
6g total carbs - 4.5g fiber - 1.5g net carbs - half an avocado
8g total carbs - 8g fiber - .5g net carbs - Flaxseed 1 ounce 4T

We are talking about hard work. Putting down your little debbies, getting off your butt and not only going on a diet but EXERCISING!!! Even if you lose the weight it will come right back if you do not have the desire and motivation to not only look cute but to be healthy. it is going to take alot of inner strength I can assure you of that.

1.) eat 4-5 small meals a day

2.) drink lots of water

3.)exercise every day

4.) do not eat 4-6 hours before you sleep

Q. I read that on the atkins diet you eat alot of fats and proteins and very minimal carbs. But do i really have to increase my fat intake? Can i just keep my fat and protein intake the same but just lower my carb intake to 20 net carbs a day? Will i still lose the same amount of weight if i do this? A. It's hard not to increase your fat intake as you will tire of chicken & fish very quickly. Also fruits are a big no no, so by not wanting to increase your fat intake you are limiting yourself to lean meats and green veggies which is an extremely strict diet and near impossible to stick to. I went on Atkins about 8yrs ago and after about a month of the diet it was giving me such sever runs, it was no wonder I lost 30lbs in 3 months. When I decided my body couldn't handle much more I went off the diet and promptly gained back 50lbs in 3 months (not dieting, but not eating terribly unhealthy either).. It wasn't until I just started counting calories, watching my food intake and exercising that I actually lost/and kept off 85lbs. I still eat whole wheat pasta/rice probably 4xper week and still can lose weight, so carbs are not necessarily the enemy so long as your monitoring your portion sizes.

I graduated high school at 240 pounds and at 5 foot 3 that made me about as round as I was tall. I was one of those overweight teenagers who ate anything and everything without any regard to the effects it was having on my own body. Therefore, I began the diet pills, which did not work; I ate the special diet foods and even began drinking diet beverages. None of this stuff worked for me, just as it does not work for millions of overweight people. Eating less did not work and I was not one to work out or even get up and do anything remotely related to exercise. I knew I would look silly and it would hurt. A. Unfortunately there are no plans out there that cost less than 50 bucks a week for a full week. Most of them out there cost about 30-50 dollars a day. However, Nutrisystem has a meal plan where they provide you with three meals a day plus snacks, and it really helps you lose weight for about 10 dollars a day. That is by far the cheapest one out there.

How many calories do u lose if you eat 1000 calories and exercise everyday?

How many calories should I burn a day if im eating about 1700 calories daily?

A. First off you need to find out what your BMR (Basal Metabolic Rate) is. It is different for everyone depending on height, weight, age, and sex. You can google BMR calculator and find a site that will give you an approximate. If you dont know what a BMR is, it is the amount of calories your body burns in a day by doing nothing. If you simply just laid in bed all day and watched TV, your body would burn these calories. My BMR is 2000. Which means if I just laid around like a slob all day, I would still burn 2000 calories no matter what. So take your BMR plus whatever exercise you do and that is the amount of calories you will burn in a day. Then factor in how many calories you intake and that will tell you if you are taking in more than you burn or you are shedding calories.

A. They make low calorie toppings for stuff like that. They have these popcorn flavorings, which can also be put on potatoes, vegetables, etc. I don't know specifically what brands your store has, but look around and they'll be in there. The brand I have is Kroger.

Can you be on Jenny Craig and not talk to a consultant weekly?

p.s dont eat much carbs I'm Asian and one of our staple foods is rice so in a meal I ate half a rice and dont forget your water.

What are the benefits of switching dogs to a grain-free diet?

Of course, after the diet, you cannot just start eating anything you want and expect to keep the weight off. The HCG diet does not correct your bad habits.

I currently have a 42 yr old client that is on the HCG diet and she has lost 20 lbs in 3 weeks with zero strength loss. She has been working out 4-6 days a week on cardio and weight training all of her life and had hit a wall. It seems like no matter what she did, she couldn't lose weight past a certain point. The HCG diet put her over the threshold and she feels better than ever. But it does require discipline and work. You have to stick to the strict diet exactly, no exceptions.

A. Busy Night Turkey Taco Soup with Avocado Cream
INGREDIENTS

* 1 (11 ounce) can Mexican-style corn
* 1 (16 ounce) can chili beans, undrained
* 2 (14.5 ounce) cans chicken broth
* 1 (16 ounce) jar chunky salsa
* 2 1/2 cups cooked, chopped turkey meat
* salt and pepper to taste
* 1/4 cup chopped fresh cilantro
* 1/2 cup low-fat sour cream
* 2 tablespoons guacamole

DIRECTIONS

1. In a large pot over medium heat, combine corn, chili beans, broth and salsa. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and stir in cooked turkey. Season with salt and pepper. Cover, and cook 5 to 10 minutes more, until heated through. Stir in cilantro.
2. In a bowl, stir together sour cream and guacamole until smooth.
3. Ladle soup into bowls and top with guacamole mixture.

Q. My husband is on a diet and I need some good low-fat and low-calorie recipes to cook for dinner. We're getting a little tired of salads! Any help would be great!

A. Mango Chicken Serves 4
4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts
3 C orange juice
2 mangos, peeled and sliced
2 T honey
1 tsp. grated fresh ginger

Grill chicken till nicely browned. While chicken is grilling, mix orange juice, honey and ginger. When chicken is about 3/4 cooked, remove from grill and place in a large skillet. Add orange juice mixture and cook until liquid reduces and chicken completes cooking, about 10 minutes. Add mango slices just before removing from heat, so they warm, but not cook. Serve over rice or couscous.


Spicy Tropical Chicken Serves 4
1/4 C lime juice
1/2 C pineapple juice
2 -3 tablespoons minced jalapeno peppers
2 cloves garlic, minced
1/4 C minced shallots
1/4 C light soy sauce
2 lbs. boneless chicken tenders

Combine all ingredients except chicken to create a marinade. Put the chicken in a large plastic zipper food storage bag and pour the marinade over the chicken. Let marinate in the refrigerator for at 2-6 hours, turning occasionally. Drain chicken and discard marinade. Grill, broil or saute the chicken as desired until fully cooked, about 10 minutes.

1/8 Teaspoon Nutmeg

Thaw fillets if frozen. Cut fish into 6 portions. Place in a single layer, skin side down, in a well-greased baking dish, 12x8x2 inches.

Combine onion, orange and lemon juice, orange rind, and salt. Pour over fish; cover and place in refrigerator to marinate 30 minutes.

Sprinkle fish with nutmeg and pepper. Bake in a moderate oven, 350F, for 25 to 30 minutes or until fish flakes easily when tested with fork.


"Grilled" Glazed Tuna Steaks

Serving Size : 4

1/3 cup Dry Sherry
1 tablespoon Ginger Root -- minced
1 tablespoon Low Sodium Soy Sauce
1 teaspoon Honey
2/3 tablespoon Garlic -- minced
1 pound Tuna Steak -- cut in 4 pieces

Combine Sherry, Gingerroot, Soy Sauce, Honey & Garlic in A 1 Cup Glass Measure. Microwave Uncovered At High 1 Min. OR Until Mixture Boils. Cool Slightly. Place Tuna in An 11 X 7 X 1 1/2 in. Baking Dish. Pour Marinade Over tuna. Cover & Chill 2 Hours. Remove Tuna From Marinade, Reserving Marinade. Preheat A 10 Inch. Browning Skillet At High For 8 Min. Arrange Tuna On Hot Browning Skillet With Thickest Portions To The outside. Microwave Uncovered At High For 2 Min.

Turn Steaks Over & Baste With Marinade. Microwave At High For 1 1/2 To 2 Min. Let Stand Covered 2 Min.
Serve Immediately With Warm Marinade. (May Also Grill Outdoors.)

How accurate is the calorie counter on the life fitness cross trainer?

Q. I think the brand is life fitness, but not sure. I use it in fitness first.

What is the best diet pill for a female looking to lose 8-31 with diet and exercise?

Q. I'm 181 and want to get down to 173 at least to have a healthy weight.Then get down to 160- 150 depending on what i look like. (healthy weight between 173-129).

Q. I weigh 137 pounds and I really want to lose some weight, because I'm extremely embarrassed to go swimming. I know there's really no "fast" way to lose weight, but what can I do to lose weight? I always drink water instead of sugary drinks, and I do 100 sit-ups and ballet squats before I go to bed every night. Any other important tips and exercises I can do for great results? Oh and I want to lose fat on my stomach, hips, and I want to tone my legs.

A. 1. First start by getting up earlier than usual. Around 5:30 AM to do some of you workouts. Getting up early shocks your metabolism because the body needs more energy to get going. Right? This will start your system on the road to weight loss. That early start with about 10 minutes of stretching. Have a cup of coffee to get the blood going also.

2. Do all the sit-ups you can. Just do them. 15 or 20 whatever, we don't have a lot of time to work with. Rest 1 minute repeat, do this for 6 sets. Already you are breathing hard and feel worn, because the body is working extra hard at being up earlier and then going right into exercise. If the early morning hour lets you get your cardio in, go ahead and do it. 30 minutes.

3. Diet. Cut all current meal portions in half, just cut them in half, nothing fancy or complicated, CUT IN HALF! Cut out all bread products, all gravies, candies, chips, night snacks, etc. If you crave at night eat a banana, other fruit or best a non-fat yogurt. There are some tasty ones out there.

4. In the evening do another 6 sets of sit-ups maxing out each set. Cardio again. The trick is to stay with getting up earlier. Yes itâs hard, thatâs why it is so effective. Why do you think the Army gets up so early, it is intense training to the max.

How to lose weight without getting muscles?
Q. Hello, i'm planning to lose some weight. I heard that cardio is good so i've started to run and cycle. But i'm afraid that too much of cardio will make me muscular too! A. If you just do a lot of cardio, you will become what they call skinny fat, no the best solution. To get a nice curvy, athletic, body you need to do weights and cardio. If you're a girl you WILL NOT gain a lot of muscles because girls don't have as much testosterone as guys do. Through a very complicated process testosterone plays a crucial role in muscle building. Girls do have it too, but in a much smaller quantities. So don't be afraid of getting too muscular, not gunna happen, unless you start injecting it.

Q. I'm looking for some recipes that can help me lose, but a recipe that will give me a few leftovers.For example when I made the chicken soup, I had 26 cups, enough for a while to last me, so I want recipes to last me, since I don't have a whole lot to spend on dieting all the time.

A. Depending how how low cal you want to make this, I can make it really low cal and very good, but it takes a bit of work.

Spray a non stick sautee pan with a bit of Pam. Then add diced 1 yellow onion, 2 cloves of garlic and half a pepper. Cook for about two minutes then add about 1/4 c. chicken stock, 1 finely diced chipotle pepper in adobo with about 1 tsp. of the sauce, and about 1 tbsp. each salt, pepper, chili powder and cumin. Let this cook on a light simmer until the liquid is almost gone. Then add about 1 lb. ground turkey breast. Sautee this up until almost done. Then add 2 large cans of diced tomatoes, 1 can of light kidney beans with the liquid and 1 can of dark kidney beans without the liquid. Mix in 1 tbsp each salt, pepper, chili powder, cumin, and oregano. Also 2 tbsp. of seasoning salt. Let it simmer on low for about 1 1/2 hours. It freezes really well. I do this all the time. Made it for superbowl and I thought I was going to have leftovers, but nothing.

Q. I know there are a lot of recipes for yeast free dieting but I don't like any of the breakfast recipes that I've tried. Anyone out there with a hidden secret family recipe that you would want to share?

A. Fiesta Eggs

Ingredients

1 egg
1 cup cooked beans (barbanzo, lima, blacked i-eyed peas, kidney)
1 Tbsp unsweetened salsa
1 Tbsp fresh herbs
1 tsp toasted nuts

Directions

Preheat oven to 275°

Place entire egg -- including shell -- in a muffin tin. Place in oven for 15 minutes.

Puree the cook beans as well as their liquid for five (5) seconds in a blender. Consistency of this should be chunky.

Salt and pepper to taste. Scoop beans into heat-proof dish. Remove egg from ovenwhen it's done. Place beans in oven fro approximate seven (7) to ten (10).

Remove beans from oven, scoop egg from shell. Season if desired.

This is a great starter recipe. From here, you can add anything you can think of: uts, herbs and even unsweetened salted salsa.

This isn't really a "recipe" per se. But I include it to help you see your eating habits in a different light. There are many wonderful food combinations with a wide variety of foods. You only need to be open to new experiences!

And after breakfast here is a great lunch or appetizer...

Exceptional Trout Appetizer

Ingredients

1 steamed trout
4 crispbread or grain crackers
1/2 cup plain yogurt
1 tbsp fresh dill weed, chopped
1 lemon, cut in half


Directions

Skin, bone and flake the cooked trout. Mix yogurt and dill weed. Place potions of the fish on the crackers. Gently spread yogurt mixture over the fish. Drizzle lemon juice over this.

How much exercise should I do during Phase I of the South Beach Diet?
Q. I am starting the South Beach Diet, and plan on exercising throughout to maximize my weight loss effort. Baby Spinach Omelet

Ingredients

* 2 eggs
* 1 cup torn baby spinach leaves
* 1 1/2 tablespoons grated Parmesan cheese
* 1/4 teaspoon onion powder
* 1/8 teaspoon ground nutmeg
* salt and pepper to taste

Directions

1. In a bowl, beat the eggs, and stir in the baby spinach and Parmesan cheese. Season with onion powder, nutmeg, salt, and pepper.
2. In a small skillet coated with cooking spray over medium heat, cook the egg mixture about 3 minutes, until partially set. Flip with a spatula, and continue cooking 2 to 3 minutes. Reduce heat to low, and continue cooking 2 to 3 minutes, or to desired doneness.

Ingredients:

* 1 cup of frozen berries (blueberries, blackberries, raspberries and/or strawberries)
* 1 scoop of whey powder
* 1 Tbs. flaxseed oil
* 1Tbs. ground flaxseed

* 1 tsp. unsweetened cranberry juice
* 1 pack of Stevia
* 8 ice cubes
* 1 cup water

Blend until smooth and if needed you can add a few ice cubes to thicken it up. Make a little over sixteen ounces, so it will a good size to go cup and you can take a quick shot of the extra before you head out the door.
