Q. I have to cute cute my caffeine and can't drink the diet Dr Pepper. What are some other caffeines free drinks that taste good. I just tried A&W diet root beer. Its not bad, but I can't do that this whole pregnancy lol.

What is the best dairy free diet for a growing child?
Q. My son currently only drinks non-dairy formula. He is at step 2 for solids. I've mainly been giving him rice cereal, fruits, veggies, oatmeal and then formula. I've been told that babies need whole milk not only for calcium but because the fat in it helps with motor skills or something like that. We are also trying to stay as fresh and raw as possible as well. What would a daily diet look like for him? How does the food pyramid look for our lifestyle? Thanks!

A. Mystic covered quite a bit, as ususal!

I would second the discontinuance of the rice cereal and also tell you to stop with the jarred food as well and start giving him fresh.

He is only 9 months.. so you have a bit of time before thinking about what to do instead of formula. Is relactation an option? It would be rather hard at 9 months, but with some dedication, you may be able to produce enough milk to supplement his diet by a year.

That would be VERY beneficial as far as fat, calcium and lots of other nutrients go.

Other than that... the main nutrients we get from milk are Vit A, Vit D, Calcium and fat.
Vitamins A&D are easy. Many veggies are great sources of A (carrots being a biggie!) and Vit D is readily produced with a little exposure to the sun (about 15 min/day).

Calcium is a bit trickier... Leafy greens are good... For me, personally, I make homemade bone broth. I freeze it and then use it in cooking. Great source of calcium and lots of other stuff.

For fat (because I lost WAY too much weight after going off dairy) I take a cod liver oil supplement (also contains A&D) and eat lots of avocado, nuts, and eggs. Of these, avocado is the only one your son can have now... but since he is still getting formula, you don't need to worry about fat so much.

I would also second the caution about soy. I limit my intake and i severely limit my sons intake. Its just not worth the chance.

Oh, yes and protein... It's so common i didn't think to mention it. We eat lots of legumes... red meat, definatly... fish is great... really anything.

A. You may find useful info here:
www.vegetarianbaby.com

In any case you might want to consult a good pediatrician.

Also realize that in China, other Asian countries, and other places around the world they consume little dairy and it's been that way for a long time. So it's perfectly normal to not need dairy from cows or other non-human animals. Being "lactose tolerant" largely came from the Northern European region of the world. So no surprise if the information you get is from that cultural bent they will say to drink milk.

What diet is best for quickly healing damaged tissue?

Q. I have a minor surgical incision wound on my foot. I want to know what foods / vitamins / enzymes are best for a rapid recovery of the tissue. I need to be able to dance at my wedding in a few weeks.

A. Vitamin E oil, usually applied on the OUTSIDE, is helpful in reducing scarring. I don't know if it helps healing.

What will help healing and pain the most is to keep your foot elevated.

Good luck

What kinda diet or diet medicine is good for someone without a thyroid?
Q. i had surgery 2 year ago because i had graves disease, i was tried all the time and lost weight . ihad to much calcuim in my body, now that my thyroid has been took out im gaining weight.

A. Forget about the diet pills. What's most important is thyroid levels. The morning TSH needs to be around 1.0 if you are on T4 (Synthroid, Levoxyl) Also, you want to make sure you are converting enough T4 into T3. You can find this out by having a free t3 test. The result should be at least midrange. If its below midrange, it means you are a poor converter of T4 to T3. A T4/T3 medication like Armour thyroid or Thyrolar might help. On T4/T3, medication dosage is adjusted by free t4 and free t3, not by TSH.

As far as diet, decrease carbs and increase fiber,

Exercise 4+ times per week. Drink lots of water and limit sugar

How is nutrition related to neuroscience and how does it affect the brain?

Q. Also, anything related to how chemicals in certain foods, like chocolate, affect the brain will be helpful! Thank you!

A. ⢠It is commonly believed that eating carbohydrates is bad for your waistline or health, but this is so not true. Low fat carbohydrates allow the brain to make more serotonin after triggering an insulin release and causing any amino acids in the blood to be absorbed into the body, making you feel better and even helping you with your weight issues.

⢠Eating carbohydrates on their own is a good idea to increase serotonin levels as fat and protein can interfere with the serotonin making process. Low carbohydrate dieters are more likely to suffer from lack of energy and low moods and high protein foods tend to lower brain tryptophan which in turn will lessen serotonin levels.

⢠Tryptophan is involved in the production of serotonin, which is a natural tranquilizer. It is useful in treatment of depression and anxiety attacks and it helps reduce the manic phase of depression with much fewer side effects than anti-depressants. Combined with vitamin B-6, tryptophan may be also helpful in reducing panic attacks.

⢠Tryptophan is used in smoking cessation, grinding teeth during sleep, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder- ADHD and in improving athletic performance.

What is absorptive nutrition? How does this allow humans to exploit fungi to produce different products ?
Q. What is meant by absorptive nutrition? How does this characteristic of the fungal lifestyle allow humans to exploit fungi to produce different products(such as food or antibiotics).
Thank you !

A. Absorptive Nutrition- describes a way of obtaining energy and nutrients in which digestive enzymes are secreted into a substrate, then smaller, easily assimilated molecules are absorbed through the cell membrane. As decomposers, Fungi use it.

Ways that we use fungi to produce products include -

Cheese (cheeses age using fungi)
Bread (Yeast is used to allow leavened bread to "rise")

Penicillin is derived from the fungus Penicillium.

Hope that helps!

How many calories should lunch be if you eat 1200 calories per day?

Q. And how many calories should the other meals be? I eat breakfast, lunch, snack and dinner?

A. Ok. Here's what I would do: 200-300 calories for breakfast (cereal with milk is usually in between 100 and 250 calories, or you can have toast with butter-not too much- and a piece of fruit, etc.). Then 300-400 calories for lunch. A 100-200 calorie snack (100 if you ate 300 calories for breakfast, or 200 if you ate 200 calories for breakfast, just make the snack healthy). Lastly, 400-500 calories for dinner (depending on how many calories you ate earlier). Remember it's ok to have a treat about once a week (moderation is the key), and it's ok if you eat more than 1200 calories sometimes. :) Good luck!

How do I replace fat with healthy nutrients when I have correct BMI?

Q. I'll be 21 this 28th and my height is 5'4" . I weigh 60kgs which is right according to my height. But the problem is I have a lot of fat in my belly and thighs and I want to reduce it. How do I reduce the fat and still maintain the correct BMI ? I want to look better by this birthday. Any tips please?

A. Start exercising and cut out how much sodas you drink.
If you drink sodas, don't drink diet, there wost for your health they reg.
Start eating healthy foods, and not so much sweats. That is not to say that you can't ever eat sweats os drink sodas, just don't have a lot of it.

These are some things that will help you get started, but don't go crazy with it either.

Good luck, and don't worry what others think you look like. It should only matter how you think you look like.

I am underweight according to bmi calculators. How can i gain weight with out eating unhealthy food?
Q. I don't want to eat anything that will make me unhealthy or blemish my skin. But I really don't like the idea of being underweight! Does anyone know what I should do? I really appreciate all the help I can get. P.s. I am a vegetarian and would LOVE it if I could keep with that.

A. i dont really think that you have to worry about those stuiped BMI calculators how old are you? Im geussing under 16 if thats true dont worry about it your body is still changing the average person thats going to through puberty is most likely going to be underweight because your growing in height and its eaiser to grow in height then it is to put on an average weight. So just dont worry but if not try target they have these shakes that make you gain weight or try power bars there both very healthy and full of vitamons. But ill repeat dont try to put on weight during puberty because it will catch up with you and you will then be overweight.

:]

How to drop my BMI but not appear as a stick?
Q. I am currently 5'8 149pds. And lately i've been dieting well and working out every other day. I am trying to create a lean muscle definition and get my abs to show but I am starting to feel and look to scrawny? Any tips to help me drop my bmi to about 9% but not in the end weigh only like 120pds????

Currrently my bmi is 19.2%
And I weigh 149 pds.

A. It seems to me that you want to be somewhat muscular and lean, but for your own sake you need to clearly define your ultimate goal.

The only way to look more ripped is to lose fat and add some muscle. Get out of the mind set of BMI and numbers on the scale. There are plenty of resources you can research about improving your diet and providing structure for workouts depending on what you want to look like.

How many pounds would a gluten free diet and exercise lose me?

Q. So this summer, I'm planning on going on a diet. I'm 14, 5'3.5, 122 pounds and going to grade 9. My goal is to lose 20 pounds in two months by eating completely gluten free(no fast food, 5 small meals a day, drinking only water) and biking for 30 minutes every morning, and doing indoor rock climbing at least once a week. Would this be enough to lose 20 pounds? If not, what would I need to change in my diet or exercising? Thanks(:

A. It's difficult to answer. Your body will change and you may lose weight. However, muscle weighs more than fat, so the scale may not move. Just make sure you're getting enough nutrients! Shaklee 180 (renewedstrength.myshaklee180.com) is gluten free and provides everything you need.

What reasons would one have a gluten-free diet other than having celiac disease?
Q. I heard on Y! Answers of a vegan who didn't eat gluten by choice apparently (they didn't appear to suffer from celiac disease). Are there any pros/reasons that you can think of that would convince a vegan to go gluten-free if they didn't suffer from celiac disease? Are there certain health benefits or anything?

A. Some people say that eating a gluten free diet is beneficial for neurological and mental conditions like ADHD, Autism and even anxiety and depression. Some people don't eat it because they just think it's healthier not to. Personally I don't think it makes any difference if you don't have any intolerance to gluten. I've also noticed that some people think they have a gluten intolerance when it's really a blood sugar problem from eating white refined grain products (white bread, white pasta, etc) and they're fine with whole grains.

What are the benefits of a gluten free diet?
Q. This question is for people who have ever tried the gluten free diet or considering a gluten-free diet. Have you felt different ever since you started the gluten free diet? What does it prevent tell me all the benefits. Also if i do a gluten free diet what can and cannot eat. Please give me gluten free diet cons and pros, Thank you for answering my question.

A. I started a low-gluten/gluten free diet when I got serious about my fitness.

I feel lighter after meals and more able to exercise. Plus my muscle/fat ratio is continually improving. Many people are intolerant to some extent without realising it and many digestive issues can be solved by butting gluten out of the diet.

Plus, while a gluten-restrictive diet is not necessarily calorie restricted, the fact that more of your calories come from protein and the fact many snacks are off-limits often translates to a lower-calorie diet, which has obvious benefits for weight loss.

I wouldn't personally recommend Atkins as a diet plan. I understand using it to lose weight in the short term but I think the macro-nutrient profile of the diet is less than beneficial in the long term. As an alternative I would recommend looking at the Paleo or Primal diet. It's based around fruits, lean meats, root vegetables and so forth. I've been doing that but including dairy products and have seen great results.

Stuff that contains gluten includes bread, pasta, rice and most empty/bulk carbs. After a while, you'll get used to checking food labels to see if stuff is gluten free.

Good luck!

What are some good snacks to bring to work during the first phase of the South Beach Diet?
Q. So far, the only one I can think of is string cheese. And maybe nuts, but you can only have a serving a day. So what's something that you can snack on throughout the day that doesn't take a lot of preparation while you are at work?
Guys, that would be something without CARBS. Low-fat snack bars are full of them.

A. i jus finished phase 1 and feelin great! there are tons of snacks you can have. below i've linked a website to help you out. you are allowed two snacks a day, so remember to take em! some snacks i would have are:

-celery sticks(2 stalks) with either hummus or natural peanut butter(about 2tbs)
-bell pepper(i used a quater of green and red) sticks with hummus(about 2 tbs)
-turkey(plain) and cheese(low fat) pinwheels(2 or 3 did the trick for me)
-10 halfed grape tomatoes marinated in a little olive oil, oregano, basil, salt, and pepper (the longer it marinates the better!)
-portioned size nuts(roasted only)
-string cheese(low fat)

the site gives you a few more to work with. remember to drink lots of water. i tend to drink water before durin and after eatin. make it cool to cold water. fills you up faster. make sure you're gettin in some type of physical activity to ensure you see those results. i hope this helps, and best of luck to you~!

How do I get started on the south beach diet and what exactly is it?
Q. I'm really wanting to be fitter and healthier and thought the south beach diet could be the way to go.

A. First of all, you need to buy the book. It explains everything in there. But just a quick overview.... There are 3 phases, the 1st phase you do for 2 weeks. You can eat things like steaks, chicken, hamburger, all sorts of meats, cheeses, vegetables, eggs. No sugar or bread or pasta. It is the strictest part of the diet. But in the first 2 weeks you can lose 8 -13lbs. I lost 12 in my first two weeks. Then after 2 weeks, you slowly start adding the good carbs. Fruits and things that are very low in sugar. After you are down to the weight you want you can go to phase 3. Which is eating things that are low in carbs and pretty much eat the things that are healthy for you. I really like the diet and you will be amazed at how your cravings for sugar will go away! I've lost 35 lbs so far. I would buy the book. There are recipes in it and there is also a recipe book you can buy. Or go to this website http://forums.thesouthbeachdietforum.com/
there is a lot of info on there

What is the south beach diet and the atkins diet?
Q. What the heck are a bunch of diets..I want to go on one of them, which one should i use? Results?Way to lose weight would be helpful too!

A. The South Beach Diet is a fine way of eating if you are close to normal weight and are not addicted to carbs. South Beach allows a higher carb level but fewer protein & fat choices (if you would rather eat beans than beef, this may be a better choice). Atkins (and I) believe saturated fat is a much more healthful fat for fueling the body. If you lower carbs you have to increase fats to fuel the body.

Eating carbs while trying to lose body fat is terribly inefficient. When in glycolysis (burning glucose as fuel) you have to lower your calories (which slows your metabolism) & exercise heavily to deplete your glycogen stores before burning body fat.

The core of Atkins program is converting the body from glycolysis (burning glucose as fuel) to ketosis (burning fat as fuel). Dietary fat levels need to be at >65% of total calories, if not, the body will still remain in glycolysis by converting 58% of excess protein into glucose (via gluconeogenesis).

It takes minimum of 3 days to convert a body to ketosis, (but only one bite to convert back to glycolysis). People feel sluggish the first week but most feel better than ever thereafter.

Simple carbohydrates (sugar, flour, bread, cereal, pasta, potatoes, rice) trigger insulin which can store the calories eaten into fat. The more protein the more the fat burning hormone glucagon is released. The more carbohydrate the more the fat storage hormone insulin is released.

Simple carbs are addictive & can be disastrous to health. The best way to break the addiction is NO carbs for 3 days. Make a huge batch of deviled eggs, eat one every time you want "something" - have huge omelets with bacon, sausage, peppers, mushrooms & cheese. Pork chops smothered with peppers, mushrooms & cheese - pork rinds & dip or tuna/chicken/turkey/egg salad - steaks - a huge sugar free cheese cake. Eat so much you won't feel deprived of anything. By the 4th day, the addiction will be gone & you can start making healthy choices.

High insulin levels promote inflammation, weight gain, hunger & unbalance other hormones. Controlling insulin levels will balance out other hormones & allow human growth hormone (HGH) to be produced naturally so lean muscle will be gained even without exercise. Any exercise will greatly increase muscle mass with high HGH levels.

You can lose more body fat eating protein & fat (don't eat protein alone) than not eating AT ALL. To lose weight fast, eat all you want, but nothing but meat, eggs, healthy oils, mayo, butter & half an avocado a day (for added potassium). Keep the calories high & the fat percentage high, at least 65% of calories. Green vegetables & some cheese will continue weight loss but at a slower pace.

The first 2 weeks eat several cups a day of (mostly) lettuce & celery, cucumbers, radishes, mushrooms, peppers & more variety of vegetables thereafter - add 5 grams per day additional every week (20 grams day first 2 weeks, 25grams 3rd week, 30grams 4th week etc) til you gain weight, then subtract 10grams. That will be your personal carb level (everyone is different & depends on how active you are.)

Start with meat, fats & salads for 2 weeks and then slowly add in more green veg, wk4 fresh cheeses, wk5 nuts & seeds, wk6 berries, wk7 legumes, wk8 other fruits, wk9 starchy veg, wk10 whole grains. You will learn how your body reacts to different foods.

The first week is just water weight but fat is lost thereafter if you keep your calories high enough. Otherwise the body will strip it's own lean tissue for nutrition. Although that may look great on a scale it will make it MUCH easier to accumulate fat in the future (since all that pesky lean tissue burning up calories will be gone). The body won't release fat stores if you lower calories below what it needs. It will slow metabolism to compensate & store every spare ounce as fat. If you continue lowering calories, it will continue lowering the set point, til it can survive off nothing & store fat on anything. The body will only release it's fat stores if it knows there is plenty of nutritious food.

Ground flax seed (2 Tbsp) 1/4 cup water, artificial sweetener, mix in a raw egg - let sit 10 min. to absorb liquid, put some cream cheese in the middle & nuke 2 minutes. Suggested for daily fiber needs.

As long as you have <9grams carbs per hour, you will maintain insulin control & shouldn't gain weight, no matter the calories. Many people gain weight on high carb, do low carb to lose weight & then are shocked when they return to high carb & gain weight. Many people can return to moderate carb levels but very few can really eat all they want of sugar & maintain weight or health.

What diet pills work the best without having to do much or a diet?

Q. I just had a baby and trying to lose some weight before my husband gets back from Iraq :) I dont have much time to diet or work out but I try at time and do try and watch what I eat if I even have the time to. Please help me out as much as you can...thanks so much!

A. I would suggest just proper diet and exersize, because if you are still breastfeeding your baby, the chemicals in the weightloss pills could be ridiculously harmful to your baby, also, there is NO TELLING what they put in those pills.
Congratulations on your husband coming home, God Bless him for serving his country. My husband just came back in May and though he was injured, it was the happiest day of my life to see him alive!

Good luck and God bless!

What diet pills have worked for you as far as supressing appetite?
Q. I have never tried any. I want to lose 10 -15 lbs. I dont need something to burn fat really, but just supress my appetite so i will eat much much smaller portions and not snack so much. Any that have truly worked to take away hunger, please make suggestions! Thank you!!

A. For me acomplia has been the best. phentermine also showed good results, but i started to get addicted and it had way too nasty side effects.
happy not to have any sides with acomplia so far.

How does Jenny Craig work? Is if safe for people that had previous eating disorders?

Q. I am asking and being 100% serious so please I am begging no stupid/insulting answers.

I am 21 and would like to lose weight, problem is I had an eating disorder for roughly 6yrs. I've been in recovery almost 2yrs so I'm doing good but it's really hard to diet without crossing the line back into an eating disorder. I wanted to try weight watchers but they don't allow people that had eating disorders to join.

So my question is how does Jenny Craig work? Is it anything like weight watchers?

A. I used to work for Jenny Craig. Jenny Craig is a calorie counting program. It is similar to Weight Watchers, except you purchase your food from Jenny Craig, and in Weight Watchers, you cook your own.

The most highly successful program for exactly what you are describing in your question above, is one called, Weigh Down, by Gwen Shamblin. You can Google Search this, and find it easily.

It is Internet based, as well as live groups in your area. All the information you need is on their website.

This program has an extremely high success rate for people with eating disorders, addiction problems, or those wanting to lose weight. It is nominally priced, so most any budget can participate.

I recommend Weigh Down head, and shoulders above any other program out there!

Hope this helped you.

Can you be on Jenny Craig and not talk to a consultant weekly?
Q. My aunt isn't comfortable talking to a stranger about her weight and weightloss. She is very timid and shy. She isn't comfortable about talking to someone she hasn't met in person about dieting. Is there an option where you can speak to a consultant by e-mail or an option to not speak with a consultant at all?

A. No. You have to speak with a consultant he/she is the one that will be following your progress, giving you the diet, and weighting you.

How do the programs for Jenny Craig and Weight Watchers actually work?
Q. I'm curious how much the food costs for a full month and what are the calorie guidelines if any.

A. I dont know about J.C., but W.W. is not about calories. You get a certain amount of points based on your weight and your activity level, and once you are done with your points, you are done eating for the day. Its a very easy program to follow, and you meet a lot of pple when you go to the meetings. You are weighed in every week, and you set a weight loss goal with help from your leader, once you hit that and you stay at your goal for 6 weeks, you are a member for life for free.

Any good diet plans or websites for someone who is severely overweight and wants to get motivated?

Q. I am now a whopping 377 lbs and have bad back problems so exercise is almost impossible. I need a strict diet plan and low impact workout plan to get me started. I really need help here. Thank you.

A. Setting yourself on a strict diet can actually be counterproductive, because many times people find that they can't stick to such a strict regimen and they end up "cheating" on the diet...feeling guilty...and well, you can see how this creates a negative cycle.

Do some research, read labels, etc. Eat a healthy diet without starving yourself. If you are a soda drinker, just replacing soda with water can make a tremendous difference.

Moderate walking daily or every other day would probably be the best exercise for you considering your weight. Someone of your size can actually burn a considerable amount of calories just walking at a moderate pace for 20-30 minutes.

What are some diet plans for a diabetic with high cholesterol?
Q. I am an uninsured diabetic who just found out that I have high cholesterol as well. Because I have no insurance I see a sliding scale doctor. They pretty much diagnose me, prescribe medication and offer me little to no advice as to what to eat. Can someone offer me some advice on a diet that may work to lower my cholesterol as well as keep my sugar where it needs to be?

A. High LDL, low HDL, and high triglycerides are common in Type 2 diabetics, especially severely insulin resistant Type 2s. I have known individuals diagnosed with Type 2 whose triglycerides were off the charts (1000+).

The best way to lower triglyceride levels is to lower carbohydrates. I dropped mine from 115 to 70 by just cutting out starches and sugars. Most doctors will tell you to limit fat to drop LDL, but my diet is very high in fat (at least 60% of my diet on most days), including saturated fat (yes, butter - lots of butter), and my LDL fell to 81 from the high 120s and my HDL increased 13 points. A traditional diet to improve cholesterol is full of carbohydrates, like oats and low-fat yogurt, low-fat cheese, and milk, but all those foods will raise your blood sugar and that will work against your cholesterol-lowering goals. Dietary fat is really not the enemy and I think a lot of confusion stems from the fact that lipids are known as 'blood fat.' There's this idea comes from equivocating different types of fat, assuming that dietary fat causes blood fat and body fat. I lost about 75 pounds eating more fat, my cholesterol improved by all measures, and my A1c dropped from over 11% to the low 5% range.

So, I would encourage you to cut back on your carbohydrates, especially grains, corn, oats, potatoes, rice, and sugar, even fruit, and to up your protein, healthy fats, including saturated, and non-starchy vegetables.

Exercise can improve HDL and omega-3 fish oil is great for lowering triglycerides, so these are some supplementary moves you can make along with dietary changes to improve cholesterol and trigs.

I'm sorry your doctor sent you home without more info. I, too, was seeing a sliding scale doctor after I was diagnosed and he gave me very few tips. I began panicking, searching the internet for help, and I talked to some great people who told me what to try. I haven't looked back. Low-carb diets are the way to go if you are a Type 2.

What are good work out and diet plans for off season basketball?
Q. im going to be a senior and im starting varsity on my high school team.

we work out at school and everything but i wanna know a good work out plans that involves running and weights...

also i would like to know a diet of healthy foods i should eat to stay in shape and what foods to stay away from..

A. To make it simple, there is a shake diet you can get on. It'll make sure your getting the nutrition you need. Its especially important when training. Its simple cuz you dont have to worry about recipes or counting calories. Works for me. Heres the website I get mine http://www.shopherbalife.com/ucandoit And as far as workouts, when I was in high school I use to put some weights on my shoulders and do jump lunges. This helped me be quicker and dunk my senior year. Building muscle would be good during the office season, and closer to the season all you have to do is condition. If your building, theres also a protein drink thats good on that site.

What diet tips have really worked for you?

Q. I have tried every diet book out there. So far, the only thing that's worked for me is a raw diet but I never can stick to it for long!

A. I still eat everything but in moderation and I count the calories that I take to know if I should stop eating for the day because I'm in a 1,000calorie diet, but in that everything I avoid junk foods like chips which I crave for and sweets because they have lots of calories but sometimes maybe once/twice a month its not bad to satisfy your craving, satisfy ok not to be gluttonous for a day and since dieting makes your metabolism slow I also do exercise like jumping rope.
p.s dont eat much carbs I'm Asian and one of our staple foods is rice so in a meal I ate half a rice and dont forget your water.

What are some good exercises and diet tips that can get rid of body fat in the stomach/abs area?
Q. Lately I've been trying to get rid of my excessive fat before my new job starts on Sept. 1. I've been able to tone my whole body, EXCEPT, for my stomach/abs area. What are some good exercises that target the stomach and abs area. Also, what are some foods that I should stay away from that could add fat to my stomach and abs area?

A. Sit ups will not help all they will do is work your ab muscles and create a bigger belly. You will need to burn it of by cardio exercises or running exercises. Running can be a pain you can try a stepping machine or walk your goal is to sweat as much as u can avoid carbonated drinks, avoid sodium or salt that will make you hold water in your system and make it more difficult to exercise. Just because your trying to get rid of fat doesn't mean you can't eat actually the worst thing to do is stop eating eat healthy like fruits, Veggies, and rice, beans, things like that.

Thanks!

How long after starting a gluten free diet will your stomach start to feel better?
Q. I have a gluten sensitivity. I just started going gluten free a week ago but I still get stomach pain and I'm still running to the bathroom. How long does the diet take to workk?

A. Well I'm not sure if you are hoping to lose weight or if you are just looking to resolve some stomic issues but here was my experience:

I was constantly running to the bathroom for about two or three weeks after I started.

If weight loss is your goal then I do have some good news (but this is really only if you truely are gluten intollerant) after the first 3 weeks of no exercise what so ever I lost 12 pounds. At that point I got really excited and started hitting the gym and now I am 6 weeks into my diet and have lost 21 pounds after putting on about 5 pounds of muscle and my body has changed dramatically. I always thought I was genetically fat but it turns out gluten intollerance runs in my family and I got on the diet after seeing the results of my other family members who did the same.

All of these results are with zero time in the gym or doing any sort of cardio
My aunt who first started the diet has lost 37 pounds in the 7 months she has done it (she was relatively thin to begin with.

My mom and another one of my aunts started it at the same time and one lost 29 in 5 months while my mom lost 51 (my mom was the heaviest)

My uncle started it 4 months ago and he has lost 35 pounds.

The really amazing thing is that with the exception of myself all the people I listed are in their late 40's or early 50's (I'm 21) and have always struggled with being overweight or even obese. If you havent visited a professional about the diet then I suggest you do so because there are many other factors that may contribute. For example My mom, my aunt, and I all have B12 defficency and are also unable to process red meat while my uncle discovered he is allergic to quite a few fruits. Hope this was helpful in some way i kinda rambles lol

How long after beginning a gluten free diet should I notice a difference?
Q. I started a gluten free diet three days ago. When should I notice any benefit from it ?I'd like to lose some weight and just feel better.

A. I have celiac disease. I noticed my first relief from some of my symptoms in 3 days. Other symptoms took months to go away. Improvement in general well-being and energy and weight loss happened slowly, but steadily. For some people, noticeable improvement takes a long time on the diet.

Many people gain weight once they start a gluten-free diet, because their damaged intestines weren't absorbing the food they ate, so they couldn't get the nutrition they needed no matter how much they ate.

Others lose weight, because their bodies have been telling them they are starving for nutrients, so they constantly feel the need to eat to satisfy cravings; or because gluten intolerance can throw the thyroid or hormones out of balance and cause weight gain; or simply because, by cutting out gluten, they are eating fewer calories and are eating a larger percentage of healthier, non-processed foods, like meat and vegetables instead of, say, pizza.

If you are trying this as an elimination diet, you could re-introduce gluten after 3-6 weeks and see if you react negatively to eating it.

What is the perfect bmi to look slim and healthy?
Q. Or skinny. My bmi is 20.8 (i know, kinda chubby) but what is the slim, healthy bmi ?

A. I think that your BMI is perfect!!
18.5 - 24.9 is considered healthy... so stay where you are! :)
If you think you look chubby then just try to tone your muscle instead of trying to lose weight.
My BMI is 17.2 and even though it says im underweight i am still healthy. So stay around the upper teens and the lower twentys and you should look amazing! :)

Good luck!

What foods are staples in a dairy and gluten free diet?
Q. I'm going on a dairy and gluten free diet because of complications with psoriasis and was wondering which foods are commonly consumed by people who eat this way.

Also, what are some common foods that I would think are fine that I should avoid?

Thanks.

A. I would suggest you check out the low carb recipe sites. Their recipes are almost all lactose & gluten free.

Gluten is also used in foods in some unexpected ways, for example as a stabilizing agent or thickener in products like ice-cream and ketchup.

Lactose is usually the allergen in milk but you should be able to have cheese, butter, whey protein, cream and probably even yogurt. I have been low carbing for nearly 6 years and my diet is very high in seeds now. I eat flax seeds & chia seeds almost every day. Chia seeds really have no taste, and swell up absorbing 10X their weight in fluid, an ounce will make 10 oz of food. I usually include them as half the volume of most all foods.

Chia seeds sound so expensive but 1# will make 10# food - Amazon.com has couple lbs. for $16 shipped to you. I buy in bulk (24#) from getchia.com for $6# with free shipping.

Chia seeds - 3.5 oz is nearly 500 calories, half calories from fat (high in Omega3 fatty acids) 38g fiber 151%DV & 16grams of COMPLETE protein for 6grams carbs & 63% DV Calcium - 95% Phosphorus - 23% Zinc - 9% Copper - 108% Manganese.

Faux tapioca - 2 cups of water, 5 scoops of low carb whey protein powder, stir together & add cup of chia seeds, after they have started to absorb the water, add in 2 cans of coconut milk (or cream and added water) & sweetener if you like and mix it all in. Can be eaten after an hour but will be better tomorrow. Cream a pkg. of cream cheese into a can of pumpkin and add to the faux tapioca for an even more nutritious pumpkin pie pudding.

per wiki -

Several grains and starch sources are considered acceptable for a gluten-free diet. The most frequently used are maize, potatoes, rice, and tapioca (derived from cassava). Other grains and starch sources generally considered suitable for gluten-free diets include amaranth, arrowroot, millet, montina, lupin, quinoa, sorghum (jowar), sweet potato, taro, teff, chia seed, and yam. Various types of bean, soybean, and nut flours are sometimes used in gluten-free products to add protein and dietary fiber. In spite of its name, buckwheat is not related to wheat; pure buckwheat is considered acceptable for a gluten-free diet, although many commercial buckwheat products are actually mixtures of wheat and buckwheat flours, and thus not acceptable. Gram flour, derived from chickpeas, is also gluten-free (this is not the same as Graham flour made from wheat).

What are the benefits of switching dogs to a grain-free diet?
Q. I've been feeding my dogs Eukanuba dog food and I've recently decided to switch to a better food. I came across grain-free kibble and I'm thinking of switching to Taste Of The Wild.
What will be the benefits of this change?

A. My dog was more active & had even a shinier coat, but this doesn't work for all dogs, for some it's too rich. It's usually a good idea though!

I think TOTW is the best.

What BMI would you have to be in order to not have a period?

Q. Im just curious. So yeah, what is the maximum bmi you could have, and still not have a period?

A. it depends on your natural size. some girls can healthily have a low weight because of genetics. that's not my case however and i lost my period when i was around a 17 BMI.

Can a BMI calculator tell the difference between muscle and fat?
Q. I'm a naturally thin person (I'm 5'5" and normally about 100 lbs.), but I'm also very athletic. During the cross country season I'm often 108-110 lbs. because muscle weighs more than fat. Whenever I calculate my BMI it says that I have a higher percentage of body fat when I'm more in shape, even though I know this is not accurate. Is there a BMI calculator available that can distinguish between fat and muscle?

A. Nope BMI does not measure body fat percentage, it's merely a comparison of height and weight and takes no account of frame size, muscle mass, etc.

The only way to get an accurate body fat reading is by DEXA, hydrostatic weighing or body fat callipers.

Is your BMI supposed to be measured by what you weigh when you first wake up?
Q. Is your BMI supposed to be measured by what you weigh when you first wake up, or what you weigh later on in the day? (Which is a few pounds more)
Thank you for your help!

A. hey well not first thing in the morning becouse while you have bee asleep your body hs had timet digest all your food you hae eaten i sugest after brekfast like an hour after kk :)

How many weight watchers point would a shrimp stuffed jalapeno be?

Q. I have just started Weight watchers and had a church function tonight at Rockfish and I ate really good except for eating 1 shrimp stuffed jalapeno. I looked on the weight watchers website but couldn't find anything that matched.

A. Probably 0 points for one. Was it marinated in anything? The jalapeno is 0 points and 1 shirmp would only be a fraction of a point so unless it was wrapped in bacon and/or marinated/basted with some kind of sauce don't worry about it.
Weight Watchers works!!

What makes weight watchers different from the rest of these diets?
Q. I've always wanted to try weight watchers, but its so expensive is it really worth it ,i just want to know whats makes it different from the rest of all these diets. How does it work?

A. Lots of great answers so far. I tried doing WW on my own with my wife(who is a lifetime member) and ended up quitting every time. I finally decided to officially join and am down 16 lbs in 7 weeks. I'm not sure what it is about joining (the weigh in?) but this is the only time it has worked for me.

I think what makes it different is that you don't have to eat a special diet to do it. You can eat all of your usual 'comfort' foods, you just need to get the portions under control which it teaches you how to do. The article below explains how to do it without joining if you so choose...

How many Weight watchers points are in a petit felouse yogurt?
Q. I would really appreciate if someone could help me find out How many Weight watchers points are in a petit felouse yogurt? I have looked all over the net and found nothing =D
So how many points is that using the weight watchers way ?

A. I looked it up and got the nutrition facts. It's 2 points in a 100 gram serving. 104 calories, 2.9 fat, and 0 fiber.

How many grams of fat should I have on Atkins diet and when will I start seeing results?

Q. Hi I have been on the Atkins diet for 2 weeks now, and I haven't lost any weight yet. I am actually a healthy BMI and I was just checking to see when I will start seeing results. Please let me know and here is my meal plan for today does it seem like I'm doing it right?

Breakfast: 2 eggs 1 slice of bacon and 2 tiny turkey sausages fried in butter

Lunch: Mahi Mahi in butter with homemade tartar sauce (dill pickle, mayonnaise, spices) and small salad with hearts of palm and lettuce with 1 table spoon blue cheese dressing and vinegar

Dinner: Hamburger patty with cheddar cheese or chicken?

A. you don't count fat in the Atkins diet. It's carbohydrates that you need to keep low. Eggs and bacon, fine. Turkey sausages may contain rusk - which is carbohydrate. Don't know what tartar sauce contains but dill pickle MAY have carbohydrate. Mayonnaise with full fat is fine but NOT low or lite versions. Blue cheese dressing MAY contain carbs.

Keep cheese low, some of it can contain carbs.

Any fish, meat, chicken, eggs, fine. Avoid processed meat if possible (that includes bacon and sausages).
Any salad or leafy green veg is fine, Avoid peas, carrots, etc, as they are starchy veg (carbs).
Butter, oil, fat, etc is fine.

My breakfast on Atkins would often be fried eggs, or scrambled eggs or hard boiled eggs, or cold meat from previous day or tuna, or salad or a mixture of these.

Lunch might be similar. Dinner would be some kind of protein with plenty of green veg.

I have provided a link to the Atkins site because they have plenty of info on there.

Make sure you eat PLENTY of fibre and drink PLENTY of water.

A helpful audio book is "The butt stops here: low carb version" by Pam Young. I have provided a link to her free videos that cover low carb

Is the atkins diet good for building muscle?
Q. I'm 5'10" 170 pounds, I'm in good physical shape I'd just like to get more ripped but still keep my weight relatively low (180 pounds at the most) but look much more ripped than I am now. Would the atkins diet be good for this?

A. The Atkins diet is a disaster for someone with your intentions of building lean muscle. It can sap your strength big time and cut into any gains in size that you are trying to make right now. Try to avoid cutting carbs very much when you are trying to build muscle.

What are the effects you experience when you leave the atkins diet and start eating healthily again?
Q. Eating healthy fats, complex carbs, counting your calories and weightliifting regularily again. What happens to your body when you leave atkins?

A. There is no better way to bring the body to the state of optimal health than with a low carb way of eating. Low carb doesn't cause high blood pressure, high blood sugar or high cholesterol, it cures it. It is actually dangerous to take meds that lower these levels and do low carb at the same time because the levels will become dangerously low. Simple carbohydrates trigger insulin. High insulin levels unbalance other hormones. Anything less that 9 grams of carbs per hour controls insulin and is considered low carb (up to 144 grams per day).

U.S. government guidelines were changed 35 years ago to suggest we lower our fat intake & increase our carb intake. American society followed these recommendations & lowered their fat intake by 11% & increased their carb consumption. In this same time frame obesity, diabetes, heart disease are all at epidemic levels. Through their direct effects on insulin & blood sugar, refined carbohydrates are the dietary cause of coronary heart disease & diabetes.

A low carbohydrate diet is a high fat diet. The protein should only be a little higher than adequate. Although it is completely possible to live on a fat/protein only diet for long term (as proven by research done in a hospital setting) it becomes boring fairly quickly. Luckily many vegetables & some fruits, nuts & seeds are low in carbs and greatly expand the diet. Most long term low carbers eat as many, if not more non starchy vegetables than vegetarians.

Glucose is the bodies preferred fuel (if you want to get technical, it actually burns alcohol most efficiently, but that doesn't make it any healthier for the body than carbs), the body can convert 100% of carbs, 58% of protein & 10% of dietary fat into glucose. The body can also be fueled by fat (dietary fat & fat cells) but only in the absence of carbs. Your brain actually prefers* to be fueled by ketones (part of the fat burning process), it does require glucose also, but glucose can be easily converted from excess protein if needed or dietary fat.

Plaque build up in the arteries is more attributable to carb consumption than dietary fats, which seems to be the conclusion of the following study. Carb consumption raises triglycerides & VLDL (bad cholesterol). Fats raise the HDL (good cholesterol). High triglyceride levels (>100) & low HDL levels (<60) are an indicator of plaque & glycation - the precursors to a heart attack & heart disease.

http://heartscanblog.blogspot.com/2009/11/after-eating-effects-carbohydrates-vs.html

study from the Oxford group examining the postprandial (after-eating) effects of a low-fat vs. low-carbohydrate diet. (Roberts R et al, 2008)

Postprandial lipoproteins, you'd think, would be plentiful after ingesting a large quantity of fat, since fat must be absorbed via chylomicrons into the bloodstream. But it's carbohydrates that figure most prominently in determining the pattern and magnitude of postprandial triglycerides and lipoproteins. Much of this effect develops by way of de novo lipogenesis, the generation of new lipoproteins like VLDL after carbohydrate ingestion.

Gary Taubes who wrote "Good Calories, Bad Calories" spent 7 years going through all the studies over the last century & dividing up the real science from the faulty science & concluded that low carb was the best way to control insulin levels which balances out other hormones & allows the body to function properly.

His main points are:

1. Dietary fat, whether saturated or not, is not a cause of obesity, heart disease or any other chronic disease.

2. The problem is refined carbs in diet, their effect on insulin secretion & the hormonal regulation of homeostasis.

3. Sugars - sucrose, high-fructose corn syrup specifically - are particularly harmful, the combination of fructose & glucose simultaneously elevates insulin levels & overload liver with carbs.

4. Through their direct effects on insulin and blood sugar, refined carbs, starches, sugars are the dietary cause of coronary heart disease & diabetes. They are likely dietary causes of cancer, Alzheimer's & other diseases.

5. Obesity is a disorder of excess fat accumulation, not overeating.

6. Consuming excess calories does not cause us to grow fatter.

7. Fattening & obesity are caused by an imbalance in the hormonal regulation of adipose tissue & fat metabolism.

8. Insulin is the primary regulator of fat storage. When insulin levels fall, we release fat from fat tissue.

9. By stimulating insulin secretion, carbs make us fat.

10. By driving fat accumulation, carbs also increase hunger & decrease the amount of energy we expend in metabolism & physical activity.

A. The HCG diet works for women. I've done extensive research and studies on this diet.

You must use legitimate HCG (injectable or sublingual). Do not fall for the many HCG scams out there today, especially the supplement variety. HCG is a prescription drug. The HCG drug is about $60 for a vial of 10,000 IUs, of course it requires a prescription. You can find an "anti aging" doctor in your area that will prescribe this. Some doctors that prescribe HCG might charge a higher consultation fee to administer it.

The many tests you will see referenced pointing to the HCG diet not working are flawed tests. These tests used many male subjects and men respond totally different to HCG than women do. Additionally, these tests failed to administer the diet correctly and used improper doses of the HCG compound.

The reason the HCG diet works for women is that it changes the her body chemistry. It tricks her body into thinking it is pregnant allowing her to eat as little as 500 calories a day and it not affect her health adversely.

Normally when eating a 500 calorie diet, an individual would lose muscle tissue as a result of inadequate calorie intake. The body would preserve and protect body fat and break down muscle tissue for survival reasons.

When HCG is present it causes her body to think she is pregnant and it will start accessing body fat stores for energy rather than muscle tissue. It will also decrease her appetite causing her to not have a hungry feeling all the time.

But you have to follow the HCG diet exactly without wavering. Any slip up will knock her out of the chemical state that HCG put her in.

Of course, after the diet, you cannot just start eating anything you want and expect to keep the weight off. The HCG diet does not correct your bad habits.

I currently have a 42 yr old client that is on the HCG diet and she has lost 20 lbs in 3 weeks with zero strength loss. She has been working out 4-6 days a week on cardio and weight training all of her life and had hit a wall. It seems like no matter what she did, she couldn't lose weight past a certain point. The HCG diet put her over the threshold and she feels better than ever. But it does require discipline and work. You have to stick to the strict diet exactly, no exceptions.

A very good resource to learn about the HCG diet is a forum at: http://hcgdietinfo.com/hcgdietforums/forâ¦

Good luck!

Diet menus to start a new plan to loose wieght?
Q. On Friday's Dr. Oz show (3-12-10) He had some menus on how to get started on the right exercise program. My husband and I need your help on loosing weight. Please Help!

A. lol @ the spam. Don't need acai berry and don't need to wash out your colon. :P

My tips to being healthy:
- Volumetrics: Eat a lot of food that is not dense in calories. Think about it like this: A Big Mac with fries and a large coke is around 1200 calories. Want to know how much healthy food you can eat for that? Probably 1lb of salad and 5 healthy burgers. Learn to cook food in higher amounts with less calories and eat more food! Portion control sucks! Who wants to eat half of a big mac and suddenly you're done for your calories for that meal. That's silly.

-Tons of Vegetables: They contain almost no calories and are incredibly healthy for you. High in fiber and great for your body. You'll live longer, feel better, think faster, and be happier.

-Eat a reasonable amount of fruit: Keep them in the earlier part of the day, but fruit is the best way to crave your sweet tooth. Want an awesome snack? Low fat, low sugar organic yogurt with raspberry and honey sprinkled with a pack of splenda. (P.S. Splenda is not bad for you in moderation.) If you're craving chocolate or something, eat fruit! Anything that is a berry is amazing for you. Oranges and berries take the cake for me.

-Eat meat: Screw the food guide. I don't know what they were thinking but there is no way we evolved eating such little protein. I recommend any lean proteins such as extra lean ground beef, ground chicken, ground turkey, lean ground pork, lean cuts of steak, pork chops, chicken, turkey, bison, ostrich, etc. Meat is more filling than almost anything you'll ever eat.

-Eat eggs: They're cheap, taste good, and are great for you! Eat 2-3 whole eggs a day with egg whites mixed in from a carton. Any study who said it is bad for you has been endorsed by cereal companies, who compete with eggs for breakfast.

-Eat breakfast and make it big!: Your biggest meal of the day should be your breakfast. I generally make mine around 500-600 calories, but I'm not trying to lose weight anymore. As the day goes on, your meals should be smaller in calories with your dinner being near the smallest out of the big three meals. (Snacks should be reasonable small.)

-Don't feed your husband soy: Soy might be good for women, but it's not for men! Don't give your husband any soy.

-Buy new cooking oils: Safflower, Canola, Corn, etc are all horrible cooking oils. Do not use Olive oil to cook because it is bad for you and has a low heating point. Use coconut oil, macadamia nut oil, or walnut oil to cook with. These are all great for you and are great for pan frying foods.

-Discover new foods: There is a lot of food to eat out there and a lot of healthy food you can make. Want to know how to make healthy muffins? Use almond meal (almond flour). Did you know that exists? Most people don't. You can make fantastic muffins out of almond meal. Want milk in your cereal? Use unsweetened almond milk! It tastes great in your own homemade granola cereal.
